Obituary of John Stirling Innis
John Stirling Innis of Saint John, husband of Leila (Sue) (Morrell) Innis, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 13, 2009, at the Ridgewood Veteran’s Centre. Born at Bloomfield, Kings County, on March 3, 1913, he was the eldest son of the late Stirling Edwin and Elizabeth (Bessie) Josephine (Pickle) Innis. John was an engineer with the Canadian Pacific Railway, and in his retirement was one of the few farmers in the area to raise “beefalo”. John volunteered as a docent at the Hampton Historical Museum, and researched his family tree, compiling a history of the Innis family. He also enjoyed playing hockey in his younger years, and was an avid fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs. A Veteran of World War II, John served in the Army, being discharged with the rank of Corporal. In addition to his wife, John is survived by a daughter, Emma Weisseneder (Kurt) of Rothesay; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Beck of Saint John; grandchildren Ingrid Harris (Peter), James Beck (Cindy), and Stephen Beck; great grandchildren Jillian, Gina, Cameron, and Lauren; brothers Frank Innis of Nova Scotia and William Innis on Ontario; a sister, Sophy Conley of Hampton; and several nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by sisters Marion MacLeod and Josephine McCready. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Wednesday from 7-9 PM and Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held on Friday at 1:00 PM from Brenan’s Chapel. Interment will take place in the Central Norton United Baptist Church Lower Cemetery at a later date. A Tribute to a Veteran Service will be held on Thursday at 7:00 PM at the funeral home. For those who wish, remembrances to any charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family. www.brenansfh.com.
