Obituary of Alice Leona Bannister

Alice L. Bannister passed away peacefully with her family at her side on December 17, 2008 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Alice was born in Saint John on August 14, 1934 to the late Marion (Naves) Bannister Carr and Arnold Bannister. A life long resident of Saint John, she attended local schools and worked for a number of years at Calp’s Department Store before joining the City of Saint John in the Finance Department in 1971. A stylish, social and independent lady, Alice was very proud of the life she made for her family and her love for her children, brothers and sisters paled only to the love and pride she had for her grandchildren. A wonderful “Nana” and “Allie”, she worked tirelessly to ensure that all occasions were special and that her family was provided for. As the Treasurer of the City of Saint John Retirees Association, she delighted in staying connected with those who befriended her throughout the years and she thoroughly enjoyed getting together daily with her special friends at Tim’s in the North End. A woman of great faith and resolve, she will be remembered as a good woman who lived a good life. Alice is predeceased by her brothers Harold, Joseph, and James as well as sisters Marion and Carol. She is survived by her daughter Elaine (Kurt) Skov Nielsen, of Quispamsis, her son Rob (Lorraine) Simonds, of Saint John, her brothers John (Joan) Bannister, of Ottawa ON, Willard (Elaine) Carr, of Keswick Ridge NB, Jackie (Dawn) Carr, of Saint John and her sisters Arna (Paul) Todd, of Vancouver and Marjorie (Gerry) Martin, of Saint John. In addition she is survived by eight grandchildren, Krista, Hilary, John, Emily, Michael, Mark, Laura and Anna; great grandchildren Zoe, Elliot and Avery; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Resting at Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506) 634-7424 with visiting on Saturday and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from St. Pius X Church, 316 Somerset Street, on Monday, December 22, 2008 at 10 am. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to any charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
