Obituary of Helen D. McCallum
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Helen McCallum of Kings Way Care Centre, Quispamsis, NB and previously Saint John West. Born, May 23, 1914, in Newcastle, NB to William and Emma (Burke) McCallum. Helen lived a full life complete with a loving extended family and many true friends. She was a devoted Roman Catholic and her faith was the cornerstone of her life and gave her great joy and peace. Helen was a nurse by profession having started her career at the Miramichi Hospital in 1932 and then moving to Saint John as the Supervisor of then new, state of the art operating rooms at the DVA Hospital in 1942. She retired from the DVA in 1979 at the age of 65 but she never stopped caring for people. Up to the last few days of her life, she was always looking after someone. She enjoyed many trips with friends and family, loved to play bridge and was always available for any kind of social gathering. She volunteered with her church and her community in many capacities including delivering Meals on Wheels up to the age of 85 to the “old people”. She enjoyed life to the fullest and will be greatly missed by her sister, Patricia McCarthy of Moncton; sister-in-law, Joan McCallum of Penticton, BC; nineteen nieces and nephews and many great and great-great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father and mother; several siblings, Katherine, Marie Irving, Percy, Arthur and twins, Donald and Doris. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424) with visiting on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 from Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Dufferin Row, Saint John at 12:00 PM. Interment to take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Newcastle at a later date. Remembrances may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
