Obituary of Mary Emma Nesbitt
Nesbitt, Mary E, RCN Lt .Cmdr. (Ret’d) – The death of Mary Emma Nesbitt of Saint John, NB occurred on June 2, 2010 at the Ridgewood Veteran’s Hospital. Born in St. Stephen, NB on April 11, 1908, Mary was a daughter of the late D. Albert Nesbitt and Rosebell (Goss) Nesbitt. Mary was a teacher for several years before starting her nursing career at the Royal Victoria Hospital in 1933. Mary was appointed honourary nursing sister to her majesty the Queen, 1956. She was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion St. Stephen. Her last appointment was on the Staff of Assistant Surgeon General FOUR as Matron-in-Chief, 1960. Mary was honourably released on the 31st of December 1960. Survived by her nephews: Peter Nesbitt of Maine and William Lockhart of Grand Bay-Westfield, as well as several great nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her sisters: Georgia Lockhart, Helena Alwood and Ethel Nesbitt; brothers: Earl and Redvers Nesbitt and nephew, James Nesbitt. To honour Mary’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Arrangements under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). Interment will take place in St. Stephen Rural Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
