Obituary of Frederick Gerald Elkin
Surrounded by his family, the passing of Gerald Elkin, husband of Roberta Elkin (Hill) occurred on Monday, September 14, 2009 at Ridgewood Veteran’s Wing. He was born on September 16, 1918 to the late Frederick and Mabel (Hugman) Elkin. Gerald served his country in the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve during World War II as a Lieutenant. Gerald was the president and vice president for various shipping agents and brokers including his company R.C. Elkin Ltd. He was a past member of Shipping Federation of Canada, Maritime Employers Association, Saint John Board of Trade, Atlantic Pilotage Authority and Chairman of Saint John Port Authority . Gerald was also a member of many clubs and service groups: Union Club, past president and club champion of Westfield Golf and Country Club, Riverside Country Club, past president and charter member of the Parrtown Club, past president of the Seaman’s Mission Society, past consulate of the Netherlands of NB and PEI and St. Mark’s United Church. Besides his loving wife of 67 years Roberta, Gerald is survived by three children: Marilyn Buttram (James) of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Robert F. (Elaine) of Grand Bay-Westfield, NB and Peter G. (Susan) of Kennebecasis Park, NB; seven grandchildren: Marqaux and Jamie Buttram, Christopher, Bradford, Jeffrey, Justin and Jennifer Elkin. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held from St. Mark’s United Church, 50 Dexter Drive on Friday, September 18, 2009 at 11 am. Interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
