Obituary of Roy Douglas Lord-Robins

Roy Lord-Robins, Saint John NB, husband of Lorraine Lord-Robins passed away at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Feb 25 after a short illness with cancer. He was born on Jan 8, 1950. At Roy’s request there is no visitation. Roy will be remembered as the friendly quiet man, with a winning smile, who sold books at the hospital book and gift fairs. He and his wife Lorraine, donated monies to all the hospitals they served for the past 17 years, first under the umbrella of Books Are Fun and since Jan 2009 on their own as R&L Books & Gifts. The concept came when Roy was a member of the bi-passers relay team after undergoing a triple bi-pass himself 17 years ago. He approached the Foundation office at the Saint John Regional Hospital and the book fairs were born. From that, most hospitals in NB and PE became recipients of monies from the sales at the book fairs. Roy was also very generous in giving donations of product for silent auctions and other fund raisers. Roy lived and worked for 10 years with leukemia but was cancer free for a year before his death from a fast spreading abdominal cancer. Roy was predeceased by his half brother Billy Shonaman. Besides his wife Lorraine, he is survived by his mother and stepfather, Audrey(Robins) and Doug Shonaman, of Saint John , Step children Christopher Parker(Colleen)of Petawawa Ontario,and Jennifer Bedell(Tom) of Halifax. Step grandchildren, Christina, Josh, Cassie, Julia & Kate. Half sisters Viola Dunham (Tom) of Scarborough Ontario and Rose Mather of Saint John along with several nieces and nephews. He thoroughly loved to surprise his wife with trips and cruises during the slow times of running their business, and he consistently brought home surprise gifts for her. After supper and before watching the 6 o’clock news Roy and Lorraine enjoyed many games of 10,000, a dice game and they were well matched. Roy’s pastimes were surfing the net for trip ideas, reading the newspaper cover to cover, walking through the malls, watching war movies and playing with the three cats…Adam, Eve and Adah. He was a wonderful cook and because he did not follow a recipe he was unable to reconstruct an exact replica of any of his dishes. He often enjoyed having friends in for meals. Roy attended Hillcrest Baptist Church from where a short celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, March 6 at 11am, with a reception immediately following in the church hall.
