Obituary of Mayes C. Leggett

It is with sadness that our family shares the passing of our loving husband, father and grandfather, Mayes Case Leggett, Rothesay, on Saturday February 13, 2010 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Saint John on September 29, 1932, Mayes was a son of the late Charles and Elvena (Matthews) Leggett. As we celebrate all that he has meant to each of us, we acknowledge that he will be especially missed by his wife Eleanor of 57 years, along with his surviving sons, David, Hampton, Glendon (Ann), Rothesay and Brent (Mary Jane), Moncton and daughters, Sandra Blair (John), Fall River, NS, and Janet MacKnight (Scott), Quispamsis; brother, Edward (Winnifred), Crystal Beach. Grandchildren, Michelle and Cory Leggett, Brian Leggett, Tyler Leggett, Matthew, Jeffrey and Christopher Blair and Jennifer and Adam MacKnight, as well as many nieces and nephews. Mayes was predeceased by his brother, Paul Leggett and sister-in-law Shirley Leggett. Mayes lived a very full and faith filled life which he shared with his family and many friends. His calm, caring and patient nature were attributs that endeared him to those he met and worked with. For many years he enjoyed the fellowship within his home church, Glen View United, where he sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and ministered through his lay preaching and involvement with the Saint John Presbytery. He loved to be with people, to talk, to listen, to laugh. Many of his most treasured moments would have been spent with his grandchildren on the beach at the Belleisle, at the hockey rink or up at the old fishing hole trying to catch “Walter”. Dad’s faith and trust that God had a plan was how he lived each day and he carried that belief with him even as his Alzheimer’s disease began to progress. Mayes worked in a variety of occupations throughout his life. His earliest work years began within the oil industry, moving on later to sales and management positions with technology and construction companies. In later years, he thoroughly enjoyed working with the Saint John Fire Department as a Lieutenant Inspector. Throughout his career years he made many great friends and the time he spent with them gave him a sense of fulfillment. Our family invites you to visit with us at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) on Monday from 7-9 PM and Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The celebration of Mayes’ life will be held on Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at Glen View United Church at 11:00 AM. Interment to take place in Ocean View Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or to a charity of the donor’s choice. “Be still and know that I am God”
