Obituary of Doreen Constance Hamilton
Doreen Constance Hamilton of Saint John, wife of the late George H. Hamilton, passed away on March 5, 2010. Born at Saint John, she was a daughter of the late Wilmer and Frances (Blatchford) Halsall. Doreen was a lady who enjoyed travel and entertaining. She was involved in many social and charitable organizations in addition to helping to oversee her family’s businesses. Her late husband, George, was avid yachtsman and together they were long- standing members of the Royal Kennebeccasis Yacht Club. Doreen’s diverse interests included golf and curling and she was a member of the Westfield Golf and Country Club; and then a member and secretary of the Ladies Section of the Riverside Country Club. She was the President of the Ladies Section of the Carleton Curling Club twice. Additionally, Doreen was a member of the University Woman’s Club, President of the Ladies Section of the Union Club, President of the New Brunswick Historical Society, President and co-founder of the New Brunswick Diagnostic Clinic for Learning Disabilities, and she served on the advisory committee for the restoration of Government House in Fredericton. Doreen was also a member of the IODE for over 60 years. She had been Provincial President and she was a National, Provincial and Municipal Life Member. She had recently been made the Honourary President For Life of the Dr. Wm. McIntosh Chapter, IODE. Doreen was also a member of the Church of St. John Baptist (Mission Church) and St. Clement, where she had served on the Vestry. Among her other achievements was the earning of a Master’s Degree in history from UNB at the age of 67. Doreen is survived by two sons, Gary H. Hamilton (Deborah Rinehart) and G. Ernest Hamilton both of Saint John; grandchildren Geoffrey A. Hamilton and his fiancée Meghan Hartlen, and Cynthia K. Gray and her husband Darryl Gray; great grandsons: Darian and Brayden Gray ; brothers Donald Halsall (Jean) and Wendell Halsall (Shirley) all of Saint John; and by several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband of 60 years, Doreen was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth Halsall (Frances) and by a sister, Marjorie Allan (T. Giles). Resting at The Church of St. John Baptist (Mission Church) and St. Clement, 815 Millidge Avenue, Saint John, with visiting on Tuesday, March 9 from 4–8 PM. A Funeral Service will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 10 at 2:00 PM from the church. The Reverend Canon Alvin Westgate will be the Celebrant. The family members extend an invitation to a reception at the Royal Kennebeccasis Yacht Club following the service. For those who wish, remembrances to the Anglican Parish of Millidgeville or the Alzheimer Society would be appreciated by the family. Interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery at a later date. The funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424).
