Obituary of William Arthur Holder
William Arthur (Bill) Holder of Saint John, husband of Dorothy I. (Trevors) Holder, passed away on Saturday, October 17, 2009 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born at Saint John on November 25, 1937, he was a son of the late Arthur William and Verah Lawton (Garnett) Holder. Bill graduated from Saint John High School in 1955, and attended Sir George William University in Montreal. His first job was with Pitfield Mackay Ross on King Street in Saint John, but his careers also took him to Ontario where he mainly worked for Northern Electric. He subsequently returned to the Maritimes where he worked for NBTel until 1975, when he left the company to be the Business Manager of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 1148, a position he held until 1982. He sold life insurance with both Dominion Life and Prudential of America until 1991, when he became a Correctional Officer at the Saint John Correctional Facility, from where he retired. Bill was Anglican by faith, and was a member of St. Luke’s Anglican Church, where he served as a Layreader and on the Vestry, and was formerly a Warden of St. Clement’s Church. He was a member of the Lancaster Seniors and NB Lodge # 22 F & AM. As hobbies he enjoyed photography, canoeing and biking, and enjoyed the time spent outdoors, especially at the camp on the Washedemoak Lake. In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by a son, Trevor Holder (Brenda) of Saint John; a daughter, April Holder of Fredericton; grandchildren Margaret (Maggie) and Katherine; a brother, Bob Holder of Rothesay; a niece, Robyn, and a nephew, Paul; and his canine buddy, Dancer. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 1:00 PM from St. Luke’s Anglican Church, Main Street, Saint John. Following a reception at the church, Interment will take place in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to St. Luke’s Anglican Church, the Animal Rescue League, or any charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
