Obituary of Maureen Brenda Girouard

Girouard, Maureen Brenda 1943 - 2016 It is with deep sadness that the family of Maureen Brenda Girouard (nee Bourgeois) of Rothesay announces her unexpected passing at the Saint John Regional Hospital on January 7, 2016. After ten days in palliative care, Maureen passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family. Born in Jonquiere, Quebec on February 21, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Emery and Yvonne (Goguen) Bourgeois, of Moncton, NB. Maureen is survived by her loving and devoted husband Leonard Girouard of 54 years; her three children: son Mike of Saint John, NB; daughter Denise Britt (Geoff) of Rothesay, NB; and son Marc (Elizabeth) of London, England; four beloved grandchildren: Daniel, Liam, Rory and Conor Britt; two sisters: Jacqueline Kelly (Leonce) of Shediac, NB and Anne Marie McGinley (Eugene) of Chipman, NB; two aunts: Theresa (Bourgeois) Cormier and Rita (Bourgeois) Hynes , both of Moncton NB; and several nieces and nephews. Maureen spent many happy summers over the years camping with her husband Len and their children, then later, after retirement, she enjoyed cruising the beautiful Kennebecasis and St. John rivers with Len aboard the Camelot. Maureen also enjoyed her recent travels with Len to Las Vegas and more recently to London, England to spend time with their son and daughter-in-law. Maureen retired in 1993 from North American Life Assurance Company in Saint John as Administrative Manager for NB & PEI. Then over the next 20 years as "Nana", she helped care for her four grandsons. Nana so adored all of "her boys" and truly loved every minute of her time with them. An avid and talented cook, Nana especially loved to bake for her family. Her adoring grandsons could always count on being greeted with Nana’s freshly baked cookies and muffins when they arrived home from school each day. More recently, Maureen looked forward to her annual weekend getaways with her sisters to laugh, reminisce and just have fun together. She loved puzzles and word games, and always had a game or two of Scrabble on the go. Intelligent, witty, generous, beautiful, and above of all, a heart of gold - she was adored and will be profoundly missed by all who knew her. Maureen's family wishes to thank the nurses, doctors and the entire staff of the NICU and Palliative Care Unit at the Saint John Regional Hospital. A special thank you to Chris Buckley who played his beautiful viola music to Maureen almost every day at the hospital. Visitation will be held at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row in Saint John on Monday, January 11, 2016 between 4-8pm. A funeral mass will be held at Christ-Roi Church, 300 Dominion Street, Moncton, NB Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at 11:00 am with Fr. J.B. Mallais officiating, with a reception at the Christ-Roi club D'age D'or following the service. In memory of Maureen, a contribution to the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra or a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated.
