Obituary of Shirley Louise Shaw
Shirley Shaw, widow of the late Maurice P. Shaw, passed away on Saturday, October 31, 2015 at Embassy Hall. She was born in Saint John, New Brunswick on June 17, 1927, the daughter of the late Elijah (Leopold) Murchison and Pearl Beatrice (Bannister) Murchison. She graduated from Saint John High School in 1944. She graduated from the Provincial Normal School (Teacher’s College) in 1946. Mrs. Shaw subsequently was employed as a school teacher to Queenstown School in Queens County, NB and the Dipper Harbor School in St. John County before she made a decision to specialize in the commercial field of commercial and secretarial education. She attended Mount Carmel Academy in Saint John, the basic commercial program, graduating in 1949 as Class Leader. She then, to enhance and gain practical experience, worked in the law offices of the Hon. J. Paul Barry, Q.C. and K.P.M. Lawton, Q.C. until 1952. She was accepted in the Bachelor of Science program at the University of Maine, Orono, where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree specializing in Education in 1954. She subsequently accepted a position as an educator in the commercial department at St. Vincent’s Girls High School for two years and subsequent to that became head of the Commercial Department at Saint John Vocational School where she remained for the rest of her teaching career. Mrs. Shaw was predeceased by her husband, her parents, her brother Robert Murchison (Elizabeth), her sisters Georgia Murchison and Marilyn Murray (late Stuart), nephew David. She is survived by her brother David Murchison, her stepdaughter Helen Michaelson, her nieces Donna Murchison, Leah Murchison and Andria Gillespie, her nephews Barrie Murchison and Mark Murchison, her sisters-in-law Elizabeth (Betty) Murchison and Dorothy (Dot) Murchison. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). Keeping with Mrs. Shaw’s wishes, there will be no visitation and a funeral service will take place Thursday, November 5, 2015, 2:00 pm at Trinity Church, 115 Charlotte Street, Saint John. In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated. www.brenansfh.com
