Obituary of Kenneth Gordon Sollows
With sadness, the family announces the passing of Kenneth (KG ) Sollows, on March 13, 2015. Ken was a story teller, a person full of ideas and plans of action. A man of many passions, boating, science, nature, political discourse; for all, his enthusiasm was contagious. The guidance and support he gave his children will be missed. Ken was born in Yarmouth, N.S. February 11, 1925, the son of the late Edwin Hammond and Ida Beulah Sollows (Graves). After high school graduation Ken joined the RCAF and then transferred to the Merchant Navy where he served on munitions ships for most of the war. Returning home he attended Acadia University graduating in 1949 with his B.Sc. degree . Ken married Alice (Cook) of Chebogue, NS in 1950, and worked for the Fisheries Research Board in St. Andrews, NB. Supporting his family became his priority . That and his sense of adventure led him to leave the Research Board and settle in Saint John, NB to run his uncle’s business, Leonard Roofers. Ken ran this company until his retirement in 1978 during which time he served as President of the Canadian Roofing Contractors Association . Retirement was active. Never losing his love of the sea, and needing to share it with Alice, these two sailed through their retirement on their ketch Sea Wench. Predeceased by his brothers Steen and Edward and his wife Alice , Ken is survived by his brother Clinton (Yarmouth) and sister Celia Nelson ( Victoria BC), his children Derek (Susan), Christine Chase (Gary), Kenneth Frank (Mary), Roy Steen (Anne Marie) Alison Sollows - Astle (John) ; grandchildren: Ethan (Sarah), Tristan, Justin, David (Marissa) and John (Laura) Sollows, Craig and Amanda (Jason) Chase, Marjorie and Alice Sollows, Logan, Jasmin (Christopher) and Trent Astle; great grandchildren: Jacob Sollows, Lorelai Sollows and Arya Chase . Ken’s friends and acquaintances are many. He and Alice had an open door for all, and their generosity and hospitality will be remembered for a long time. We will miss him, but our loss is lightened by knowing that he and Alice are back together. Visitation at Brenan’s Funeral Home (634-7424), 111 Paradise Row, Saint John on Wednesday, March 18, from 2- 4 and 6 - 8 PM; there will be no funeral at Ken’s request. Donations in memory of Ken, may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
