Obituary of Christine Elaine McCartney

Christine Elaine (Reynolds) McCartney. Christine McCartney, wife of Dr. Eric D. McCartney, passed away January 8, 2016 in the Palliative Care unit of the Saint John Regional Hospital after a very brief courageous struggle with cancer. Born at Old Ridge, NB (St. Stephen-RR#3) on September 6,1940, she was the daughter of the late Melbourne Reynolds and Bessie (Mitchell) Reynolds. She graduated from St. Stephen High School and the Charlotte County Hospital School of Nursing. After marrying Eric on August 24, 1963, she worked as a Registered Nurse at The Montreal General Hospital. Eric always gave her credit for buying the groceries while he finished McGill Medical School and his lengthy General Surgery training. They moved to Saint John and built their family home on Park Drive, Kennebecasis Park, Rothesay (formerly Renforth) in 1972 and have resided there to this time. Christine is survived by their 2 children, Catherine of Rothesay; and Dr. Jeffrey McCartney (Dr. Janice Barnes) of St. Lazare, QC; and 2 grandchildren Claire and Steven McCartney. She was a full time proud mother to Cathy and Jeffrey and a loving grandmother to Claire and Steven; she had a heart so full of love. She was an exceptionally kind and caring individual who always thought of others first and did not ask for much. Also survived by sisters Pauline (late Hazen) Boyd, St. Andrews; Marion (Colin) Fisher, St. Andrews; Ruth (Richard) Maxwell, Rothesay; Jean Reynolds, of Saint John; and brother William Reynolds (Hazel Marie) of St. Stephen, NB; as well as many nieces and nephews. Christine was predeceased by her older sister Marjorie in 1989. Christine was a long time member and supporter of St. David’s United Church in Rothesay. She had taught Sunday School and actively supported the United Church Women (UCW) in their spring and fall luncheons and many food sales. In recent years, until her current illness, she coordinated St. David’s monthly contribution to the KV Meals on Wheels and was a strong supporter of the weekly lunch program at St. David’s for Rothesay High School. Christine had a long association with terriers- West Highland White terrier Muffin and Scottish terrier Bonnie, and currently West Highland White terrier sisters Heidi and Emma, and foster dog Katie, a Scottish terrier. She enjoyed making various crafts for many years, gardening and many trips to New England with her family. Also, she enjoyed Irish singer Daniel O’Donnell and saw his shows from Halifax to Montreal and Florida to Branson, Missouri some 15 times. She always met Daniel after the shows. Those were good times! Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (634-7424). Christine’s funeral service will be held at St. David’s United Church in Rothesay, NB on Monday, January 11, 2016 at 2:00 PM. Interment will take place in the family lot in the St. Stephen Rural Cemetery at 12 Noon on January 12, 2016. No flowers by request. Donations to the IWK Children’s Hospital, SPCA or St. David’s United Church in Christine’s memory would be appreciated.
