Obituary of Elaine Harriet MacFarland

Elaine Harriet MacFarland, passed away on January 4, 2016 at Saint John Regional Hospital. Born on August 22, 1938 in St. Stephen, NB she was a daughter of the late Harold and Hilda (Hastey) Caldwell. Elaine was raised on Pomeroy Ridge attending the County’s one room school house. She graduated from St. Stephen High School. In 1956 her education continued at the Normal School for which she graduated in June 1960. She taught school for 34 years beginning in Harvey Station and completing her career at Westfield Elementary in 1994. In October 1985 she received her Bachelor’s Certificate in History and Sociology from UNBSJ. When Elaine retired she joined the Westfield Golf Course where she served as Lady’s President for 2 years. In winter bridge took the place of golf, she belonged to several groups. She made many good friends in both of these activates. In 1980 she was invited to join Beta Sigma Pi for twenty years was a hard working member. In 2000 the group changed to Circle of Friends and continued successfully to meet and enjoy each other’s friendship. She is survived by her husband, Charles Richard MacFarland, Grand Bay-Westfield; son Jonathan Richard MacFarland (Marie Elaine Gallant), Saint John; sisters, Shirley Johnston, St. Stephen; Donna Cleghorn, St. Stephen; Barbara Caldwell, New Hampshire; Myrna Caldwell, British Columbia; Gail Kelly (Ken), Little Ridge; Janet Anderson (Craig), British Columbia; brother Blair Caldwell (Lynn), Pomeroy Ridge. Arrangements are under the care and direction Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) The funeral service will be held from Westfield United Church on Thursday, January 7, 2015 at 11 am. There will be a time of visitation from 10 am until the service time on Thursday at the church. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Diabetic Association, Westfield United Church or to Kidney Foundation of Canada.
