Obituary of Thomas Ervin Owens
Thomas "Tom" Owens of Saint John passed away in his 94th year on Thursday, December 11, 2014 at Ridgewood Veterans Wing, Saint John. Born on January 10, 1921, he was a son of the late Thomas and Mildred (Mitchell) Owens. Tom was a proud veteran having served his country in World War II as a member of the St. John Fusiliers from September 2, 1939 to November 1, 1945 in Canada, the North Pacific and United Kingdom. He was a sergeant at his time of discharge. A lifelong resident of Saint John, Tom retired after a successful 42 year career, retiring as terminal manager Marine Atlantic, Bay of Fundy Ferry Services. During his retirement years, Tom enjoyed walking, driving, reading, playing crib, cross country skiing, and lawn bowling. He was a very proud life member of the Seaside Lawn Bowling Club and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #58. Tom is survived by his seven children: Shirley (Harold) Miller, Saint John, Thomas (Thea) Owens, Calgary, AB, David (Anna) Owens, Upham, Carole (Malcolm) Beaton, Nepean, ON, Michael (Nancy) Owens, Rothesay, Stephen Owens, Saint John, and Jane (Earle) Mallory, Sussex; brother, Lloyd (Kay) Owens; 14 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents Tom was predeceased by his wife of 39 years, F. Grace (Dunham); brothers: Herbert, Joseph and Gordon Owens and sisters, Dorothy Porter and Helen Saunders. The family wish to send heartfelt thanks to the staff at Ridgewood Veteran’s Wing for the excellent care and respect shown to our dad. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visiting on Saturday, December 13, 2014 from 7-9 pm and Sunday, December 14, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Royal Candian Legion tribute to a veteran service will be held on Sunday at 7pm. The funeral service will be held from Brenan’s Funeral Home Chapel on Monday, December 15, 2014 at 10am. Interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery’s Columbarium at a later date. For those who wish to do so, remembrances may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Imperial Theatre, Ridgewood Veteran’s Wing or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
