Obituary of Bernice Thelma Johnston
With great sadness, the family of Bernice Johnston announces her passing on Sunday, July 13, 2014 at her residence, with her family by her side, after a period of illness. Born April 20, 1936 in Saint John, she was a daughter of the late Mabel (Hayward) and Edward Wood. BJ was a very dedicated employee for over 20 years, retiring in 1993 as the Front End Manager at the Garden Street Irving. Bernice was an avid horse racing fan, and spent a lot of time cheering on her daughter and son-in-law’s racing horses. Her grandsons, Christopher Allen Edward Mahar and Jamie Lee Mahar, were the apples of her eye and the centre of her whole universe, and she never missed an opportunity to attend their sporting events or anything else they were a part of, even while she was sick. She will be deeply missed by her grandsons, her loving daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Wayne Mahar; and her special friend, Donna Speight (Joe). Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers: Edward and Norman Wood. Resting at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Monday, July 14, 2014 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at 12 noon from Brenan’s Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery. Remembrances to the Capt. Edward G. Wood Jr. Firefighters’ Association, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family. Please place online condolences and remembrances at www.brenansfh.com.
