Obituary of Melvin L. Gillis
The death of Melvin L. Gillis of Saint John, New Brunswick, husband of the late Charlene (McKinney) Gillis, occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Monday, September 15, 2014. Mel was born in Tower Hill, Charlotte County on June 7, 1927. He was a son of the late Harry and M. Maretta (Cunningham) Gillis. He spent the greater part of his life in the Saint John area and had been employed with Kinghurst Dairies and worked for many years for Irving Paper, retiring in 1990. Mel was predeceased by a son, Warren M. Gillis and daughter, Debra, two brothers, Joseph and Ian, and three sisters, Elaine Hannon-Bacon, Charlotte Coté, and Marion Gillis. He is survived by his fiancé, Anne Russell, two daughters, Pam Stackhouse (Steven) and Kimberly Moore (William), two brothers, Allen (Bev), and Phillip (Eileen), four sisters, Olive, Vera, Jean and Grace, several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and his extended family Leanne, Michael and Ken. Mel is resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home 111 Paradise Row (634-7424). Visiting hours are Wednesday, September 17, from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. The funeral service will be held from Brenan’s Chapel on Thursday, September 18, at 10 A.M. with the interment at Ocean View Memorial Gardens. Donations can be made to Bobby’s Hospice a charity of donor’s choice.
