Obituary of Mary Eleanor Conway
Conway, Mary Eleanor (Hanlon) of Saint John died peacefully, surrounded by family, on October 17th at Rocmaura Nursing Home. Born on August, 9th, 1929 Mary was the daughter of the late Edward and Eleanor (O’Neill) Hanlon and she was the beloved wife of the late Richard T. "Dick" Conway. Mary is survived by her children; Elizabeth "Beth" (Alex) Small of Whitby, Ontario; Susan (John) Delaney of Saint John; and her son William "Bill" (Lynnann) Conway of Beaverbank, Nova Scotia. Faith and family were the cornerstones of Mary’s life. She is survived by seven grandchildren; Caitlin Small (Whitby), Robyn (Andrew) Thomas (NSW, Australia), Maryanne (Jeff) Scammell and Catherine Delaney (Saint John); Tyler Conway, Nydia Conway and Rylan Conway, all of Beaverbank, Nova Scotia. Mary was the great-grandmother of three beautiful children; Avelyn Small, Maria Scammell and Hudson Thomas. Mary was the third-born of a family of thirteen children. She is survived by her brothers; Cyril (Pat), Paul (Eleanor), James (Mary), Francis "Butch", Pat (Sharron) and her sisters; Doreen Marcon, Helen (Gerald) Vickers and Anne (Mike) McNamara. Mary was pre-deceased by brothers; Gerard, Louis and Maurice and by her sister Constance "Connie" Winchester. Mary is also survived by Sisters-in-Law; Dorothy (Louis) Hanlon, Patricia (Maurice) Hanlon and Special Friend, Eileen MacDougall who assisted with Mary’s care with such devotion that she is now considered a member of Mary’s family. Mary was an aunt to numerous nieces and nephews, including special niece Mary Butler and special nephew John "Jack" Winchester. Mary was also pre-deceased by her Sister-in-Law; Theresa (Gerard) Hanlon; Brothers-in-Law Vincent (Connie) Winchester and Guiseppe "Joe" (Doreen) Marcon; and life-long friend Mary "Molly" McDonough. Mary worked as a school secretary at St. Malachy’s High School. Following several years at home with her children Mary returned to her career at Alexandra School, M Gerald Teed School and finally at St. Joseph’s Hospital prior to her retirement. Mary was a faith-filled and devout Catholic and enjoyed attending Daily Mass. Mary enjoyed the "grace of a happy death" as she entered into her eternal rest. She was a life-long member of St. Peter’s Parish and was a member of the St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary. The family would like to acknowledge Mary’s care-givers from Rocmaura Nursing Home who provided excellent care to Mary during the past six years. While Mary’s care was always delivered with professionalism and kindness; the compassion, affection and support provided by Mary’s "Rocmaura Family" during her final days was especially appreciated. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (634-7424) where visitation will be held on Monday, October 19, 2015 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM.
