Obituary of Kenneth James Barrett

With great sadness we announce the passing of husband and father Kenneth (Butch) James Barrett, of 27 Margaret Street, Saint John, on Wednesday, June 13, 2007 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Ken was born in Saint John to the late William and Florence Barrett. Butch went to work at the Saint John Sugary Refinery at the age of 14 and retired in 1991 with 47 years of exemplary service. Throughout his 47 years he was Credit Union President for the Refinery and organizer of countless family events for his sugary refinery family. He concluded his years at the refinery as Foreman of the Maintenance Department of Lantic Sugar. He is survived by his beloved wife and best friend Connie (Gilliland) Barrett of almost 58 years. Butch was very passionate about his love for his grandchildren, KC, the family dog, and spending time in the Cambridge Narrows at his trailer. Butch was loved by all who knew him and charmed by his outstanding ability to tell a story. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 25 years and also a member of the Luxor Shrine Temple and the Shrine Marching Band. He is survived by his wife, three sons Frederick (Peggy) of Hampton; Steven James; Gary (Margo); and the second lady of his life his Daughter Cathy Barrett Kay. Ken and Connie have nine wonderful grandchildren and was affectionately known as Papa to them all: Troy, Robbie, Adam, Amy, Andrew, Meredith, Aaron, April, and Matthew. Papa lived long enough to see three beautiful great grandchildren born Keegan, Keira and Olivia. Butch is survived by one brother William (Buddy) Barrett of West Saint John; his life long best friend and brother-in-law Malcolm Dennison and sister-in-law Norma Gilliland. He was predeceased by two sisters Betty Whitaker and Ruth Martin. The Family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to the Doctors and caring nurses of the Saint John Regional Hospital and special thanks to all those in Palliative Care. Visitation will take place Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 pm from Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). A Masonic service will take place on Thursday at 6:30 pm at the funeral home. A celebration of Ken’s life will be held on Friday morning, June 15, 2007 at 10:30 am from Brenan’s Funeral Home Chapel, with a reception to follow. Private family burial to follow. Remembrances to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
