Obituary of Susan Margaret Chapman
Susan Margaret Chapman, wife of the late Charles Douglas Chapman, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 26, 2007 at Ridgewood Veteran’s Home, Saint John, after a brief illness. Born at Cody’s, NB on December 22, 1910, she was a daughter of the late George and Maude (Schroeder) Thorne. Following graduation from Sussex Public School in 1927, she moved to Halifax where she worked of W. F. Simpsons Eastern Canada. She enlisted in the C.W.A.C Army Corps, and served her country during World War II, sailing overseas in February 1944 and worked as a wireless operator. After the war, she returned to Sussex in 1946. Her career included working at NBTel as a switchboard operator, as well as working switchboard at the Sussex Health Centre, from where she retired in 1976. Susan was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 20, Sussex, and was an adopted member of Branch # 68 in Saint John. Susan is survived by one son, George Chapman (Jean) of Quispamsis; grandchildren Shannon Lee Chapman (Andrew) of Calgary, Alberta, and Kerry-Jean M. Chapman (Andrew) of Quispamsis, as well as several nieces and nephews. The last surviving member of her immediate family, Susan was predeceased by a sister, Elmira Dickson, and a brother, N. Foster Thorne. Susan’s family wishes to thank the staff of the Ridgewood Veteran’s Home; Dr. Shawn Keys and Dr. Johnson; Rev. John Martin and Father Keating for all the compassionate care she received. In keeping with Susan’s wishes, a private funeral service will be held for her family. Interment will take place at a later date in Kirk Hill Cemetery, Sussex. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Ridgewood Veteran’s Comfort Fund or any charity of the donor’s choice.
