Obituary of Roy Steer

Surrounded by loved ones, Roy Steer passed away peacefully on October 7, 2012 at Bobby’s Hospice in Saint John. When Roy was born to parents Ada and John Steer in Yorkshire, England, on December 12, 1930, the world received a gift. Growing up in the Depression years cultivated many of his qualities: energy, persistence, and creativity in the face of difficult problems; generosity, fairness, and a ready willingness to help when dealing with people. Roy’s heart led him to pursue and marry a beautiful young piano student, Winnie Ball—a courtship that began at the age of fourteen and a love that will endure forever. Roy’s intellect led him to a career in engineering and then in teaching (lastly at the Community College in Saint John). His skills and capacity were recognized when he became the first person in New Brunswick to be granted Professional Engineer status without ever attending university. Retirement afforded Roy the opportunity to devote more time to playing the piano, working on the house he and Winnie had designed and built together, and sailing. Later, as a resident of the Chateau de Champlain, Roy shared his musical talents and sense of humour, making many dear friends along the way. Roy leaves behind Winnie, his wife of 60 years; three children, Patricia Daley (David) of Riverview, Pamela Dobbin (Jim) of Bridgetown NS, and Paula MacFarlane (Ross) of Havelock; ten grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. His family in England includes two sisters, Enid Wadsley (Gordon) and Sylvia Lawson (Alan), and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Drs. Karen Rombaut, James O’Brien and Margot Burnell. Much appreciation goes to Dr. Chris O’Brien and the staff and volunteers of Bobby’s Hospice for their exceptional kindness and loving care. Also, sincere thanks go to extra-mural personnel, especially Mylène Drapeau. At Roy’s request, there will be no formal visitation. A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Friday, October 12 at Brenan’s Funeral Home Chapel. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bobby’s Hospice or a charity of the donor’s choice.
