Obituary of John Wilson Hollway

After a long and wonderful life, Jack passed away at his home in Rothesay on Sunday, December 9, 2012 surrounded by his family and dogs. Jack was predeceased by his loving wife, Dorothy, of 69 years, in February 2012. He is survived by his children, Louise Kindree (Roger) of Caledon, ON, Edith Ehrhardt (Greg) of Norton, NB, Shirley Smith (Tom) of Saint John, NB, and Dr. Gordon Hollway (Denise) of Rothesay, NB. Dorothy and Jack were the proud grandparents of Jason (Jenn), Lisa (Mark), Melissa (James), Danial, Lara, and Jonathan, and great-grandparents of Brennan and Grayson. He was predeceased by his brother, Dr. Richard Hollway, of England. Jack was born in Jansen, Saskatchewan on September 7, 1915. Jack graduated from St. John's College in Winnipeg. He went back to Jansen intending to take up farming, however, the war broke out and he joined the Canadian Air Force in the spring of 1940. He got his wings in 1940 and joined a fighter squadron on the East Coast for 2 years. While training in Bagotville, Quebec, he met the love-of-his-life, Dorothy Hawkings and they were married in March 1943. Soon after he went overseas and was loaned to the Royal Air Force. He spent 2-1/2 years with a R.A.F. Fighter Squadron flying Hurricanes in India, Ceylon and Burma. Upon return to Canada after the war he worked 19 years with Price Brothers Pulp & Paper Co. in Northern Quebec and in 1964 moved to New Brunswick and worked for MacMillan Bloedel - Rothesay Paper until he retired in 1978. Jack enjoyed bird watching, country drives and traveling abroad with Dorothy. He was a member of the Saint John Naturalist Club and participated in many of the annual bird counts. He was an avid stamp collector, reader and gardener until his eyesight failed. He was also a longtime supporter of the World Wildlife Federation. Special thanks go out to Drs. In lieu of flowers, the family would greatly appreciate donations to KV Extra-Mural which can be done through either Brenan’s Funeral Home or the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation. As per his request, there will be no visitation and a celebration of his life will take place at a later date.
