Obituary of Allan Percival Smith
On Thursday, June 13, 2019, Allan Percival Smith passed peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Saint John, NB, on May 16, 1953, he was the son of the late Sarah (Finn) and Percival Smith.
He is survived by his loving wife and best friend Clare (Stark) Smith; daughters Erin Keith (Kristopher) and SaraDawn Smith; sister Elaine Daley (Stephen); nephew Harry Daley (Angela); niece Anne Daley; granddaughter Kaileigh Keith - Grampie's special girl; grandnephew Jasper Daley; and several cousins.
Al began his Civil Engineering career as a Technologist in 1974. He joined the City of Saint John Municipal Operations in 1989 and worked until retirement at age 61. His favourite pastimes included summering at their cottage on Kennebecasis Island, visiting European museums, art galleries, and churches, and watching and attending NFL games throughout the US and England. He was an avid bridge and chess player, and a longtime curler at TSA where he was on the board of Directors. He was passionate about all types of music.
Allan was very active in his church community. As a warden at Trinity Anglican Church, he took a major leadership role as part of a small group of people who saw to the end a complete renovation at Trinity Church School House Hall. He was proud and honoured to be part of the Parish Nursing Program that evolved as a result of this renovation. In recent years, he was pleased to participate in parish life at St. Paul's, the church where he was confirmed as a child.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the amazing staff of the Palliative Care Unit at the SJRH. Donations to the Palliative Care Unit at SJRH may be made in Allan's memory at www.BrenansFH.com
