Mr Matthews
Such an incredible dedicated and caring teacher. It was an honor to have been a student of his. When I think of him I see his big warm smile. Even when he would get frustrated with us his smile would always betray him.
He made learning fun and left a lasting desire to do better. You are remembered fondly by all who had the honor of entering your classroom. Thank you Mr Matthews.
My deepest condolences to his family.

Mr. Matthews was one of my favorite teachers. I'll never forget the dancing mothballs science experiment, and I still to this day can recite the elements in the periodic table. But the thing that stands out the most in my mind is the fact that he treated his students with respect and made us feel that we were capable and worthy. I have all the respect in the world for Mr. Matthews and I'm very sorry to hear of his passing. My condolences to his family.

I had the privilege of being taught science by Mr. Matthews in the mid seventies. In 1994, I did a teaching internship at Lorne and Bob and I became colleagues. i grew to appreciate his wicked sense of humor. In the next decade we would often cross paths on Uptown streets. He always had time for a friendly chat. He was atrue mensch.

My favorite science teacher and up-country neighbour. We once had a substitute teacher in Grade 8 and managed to be so rude and unruly, she left the classroom in tears. When Mr Matthews came back to work, he closed the classroom door and gave a lecture on "respect"... no one moved or uttered a sound. It remains with me to this day. So very sorry for the loss of this fine gentleman. My thoughts are with you, Vivian and Leslie.

Mr. Matthew's was an incredible teacher. He was tough but fair; in times when I thought I couldn't solve a math or science problem he gave me the encouragement to continue to try. He is the reason that, to this day, I can still recite most of the periodic table. Rest in peace Mr. Matthew's; you inspired your students to have confidence in themselves when some of us didn't have any. May God bless you!

Mr. Matthews’s teaching specialty may have been science, but for those of us who embraced the written word and considered the Periodic Table of the Elements pure Greek, he was also one heck of an English teacher. Mr. Matthews made The Pigman come alive in his 1981 Lorne Junior High School Grade 8 English class. Indeed a classy fellow.

Mr. Mattews was one of my very favorite teachers. My husband and I were both students of his at the same time and never met. He was kind but didn't take any nonsense from any students. I always remember being grossed out when the chalk was too small to use..He ate it. LOL He said its calcium and completely healthy for you. That was what was awesome about him. Spontaneous and could surprise you. I had him for all his subjects. Math, Science and Health.
My husband and I bumped into him I believe in the fall. He remembered us both and we laughed and caught up with him. Told him about our family. He made our day.
Thank you sir for what you taught us. I will never forget the memories of Junior High and what we had with you there.
Rest with Jesus. We will meet again.

Dear Vivian
Please accept sincere condolences from all of the Vail family on Bob's passing. I'm sure you remember our family from the Cedar Grove Crescent days, my grandparents were Gordon and Helen Vail, my dad is Billy, his brother Malcolm and sister Fonnie. Dad and Malcolm are still much with us, Fonnie passed 20 years ago. I grew up there as well and still remember Bob's cool little car, think it was a Datsun. I also became a teacher and would see Bob from time to time at Math and Science meetings etc. I'm now retired. Just wanted to share that we remember him fondly. God bless

I told them I was lucky enough to have him for homeroom in grade 9, I had math with him, not my favorite class, however he was the kind of teacher that made you want to be there everyday you couldn't wait for Science class. He had a kind heart, and wanted you to succeed. I loved getting off topic and listening to stories of his childhood. My condolences to your family during this very difficult time. His contribution to this world lives on in the hundreds of people like me who's successful careers were seeded by his abilities to reach the minds of even the most uncaring/inattentive of us and show us that we could be more than we were.

Mr. Matthews was an inspiring teacher! He taught me both math and science at Lorne. He had a keen mind, and made you want to do always your best for him. While teaching science, he would wear his white lab coat, and he always rolled up his sleeves for math, tossing the chalk in his hand. He was funny, kind, and always showed an interest in us when we were young and when we grew up. I am a teacher myself now, and Mr. Matthews sent me a letter when he read something about a special project I was doing in the newspaper years ago. I would see him around the north end, shopping usually, and he never forgot my name or failed to ask me how things were with teaching and my family. He cherished being a teacher and the students that crossed his path. I remember his laugh, arms behind his back as he walked, dedication to us, and his professionalism. They do not make teachers like him anymore! God bless you, Mr. Matthews! Rest well and in peace. Thank you for sharing your talents and gifts with us. To the family, please accept my sincere condolences.
