Mr. Lunney was the most influential teacher in my educational career. He inspired me to be an educator and tracked me down a few years ago just to catch up. Mr. Lunney always made me feel valued, respected, and capable of anything I put my mind to. I'm saddened to hear of his passing. He touched so many lives and his spirit will certainly live on in those he impacted. I'm so thankful that our paths crossed.
I hope that you are comforted by warm memories during this difficult time. Mr. Lunney was truly special. Thank you for sharing him with so many. His legacy lives on in all who were fortunate enough to know him.

To Heath and the rest of the Lunney family,
Please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of Bernie. I first met Bernie in the staff room of Bayside Middle School when I was a beginning teacher. It was one of my first jobs (if not THE first job) as a teacher and Bernie was one of the first people I met. He was good at making people feel welcome and I was lucky to have received his attention on that day because I was pretty nervous. He introduced himself and helped calm me down by showing an interest in me and in my first steps as a rookie teacher. It is with deepest sympathy that I write this and hope you are receiving the support and care you need from family and friends during this difficult time.
Truly,
Chris Weir (and the Weir family)

My condolences to all of the Lunney family on the loss of such a wonderful man. Many years ago, while out for a walk in Saint John, with my parents, I first met Mr. Lunney. After being introduced to him, he invited me to come see him about a teaching job. A few days later, Mr. Lunney hired me to teach for him at Jackson and Henry. He was a man of principal and compassion and I learned so much from him during my six months teaching there. Following this, I returned to my permanent teaching job in Ontario but always remembered Mr. Lunney and my time at Jackson and Henry fondly. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this difficult time.

Mr. Lunney was a truly inspirational teacher and mentor when I was a student at Bayside in the early ‘80s. My fondest memories of him are in his role in supervising our school newspaper, “The Bayside Bullet”. It was my favourite project in junior high. Mr Lunney enthusiastically encouraged my interest in writing and helped instil the idea that I could succeed at whatever I chose to do. I don’t think he or I at the time realized that I would make journalism my career, but that’s what happened, and he is one of the reasons why.
Rest In Peace, Mr. Lunney, and my condolences to all the family.

Cannot miss to add a final but small memory of Mr Lunney as our beloved Grade 8 teacher in grade 8A at St Francis Jr. High school in 64-65...worth a tiny chuckle I believe. We were in our seats, trying to learn that "forgotten language" Latin and Mr Lunney began an answer to one of my fellow classmates questions that had him say he was in the "army of God " before he was a teacher. I blurted out my follow up question to him and it was ..." Was that the Salvation Army ? ".....I immediately shrunk so far into my seat that I nearly disappeared...entire class was laughing at me...Mr Lunney just smiled. Remembrances are plentiful for this gem of a human.

After all my educational years ,Mr Lunney was my favorite teacher. He made such an impact on my life.My last name was Bernard and one day some kids were teasing me , calling me Debbie Barnyard, and he pulled me aside and told me never to let any one try to make me think little of myself. He told me I was such a smart girl and and to never allow anyone to make me feel I was less than anyone else.I have lived my life this way!!I haven't seen Mr Lunney since I left St Francis school but I have never forgotten him .God bless you all in this time of sorrow and take comfort in knowing how many lives he has helped shape.

My Gr.8 class 63-64 at St. Francis consisted of the most fortunate kids in the city because Mr. Lunney was our teacher. At that time, he was recently out of the seminary - it was a few years after he got his teaching certificate (thanks to St. Thomas U recognizing some of his theology courses) and Nancy was still his girlfriend. I don't remember what subjects Mr Lunney taught us but I remember our class was very busy fund raising, planning class parties and outings - the parties in the gym, the class cycling to Chapel Grove - and with the surplus funds at the end of the year, Mr. Lunney bought us all post-Vatican New Testaments - some of my classmates still have theirs 55 years later. Our class reunions were legendary - Mr. Lunney had 8mm films of our class events that were converted into CDs - what great laughs we had looking at our Gr 8 selves! The testimonials voiced at our class reunions were so sincere and moving - we realized what a positive influence he was on each of us. Mr Lunney loved being a teacher and we loved being his students. We all agreed that he was the BEST TEACHER EVER.
RIP Mr. Lunney and thank you.

Janet, Mike and the Lunney family. I have such fond memories of your dad. He was the kind of dad that played with his kids. I have great memories of pine cone camping and playing hide and seek at Bayside school in the dark on a rainy Sunday. Even in the older years at the Simonds reunions he was always so much fun. RIP Bernie. Heaven has gained a wonderful soul.

Mr Lunney was the director when I went to Academic Upgrading at the Dr Roberts building in 1993.
He was a great instructor and a man with a lot of ideas. He gave me some good ideas for some of my short stories.
He is going to missed by everyone who knew him.
Sorry I can't the time off to drive to saint john to pay my respects.

Mr. Lunney was without a doubt the most loved teacher in Saint John. He taught me a d then later all 3 of my children, one of which he always called her "Polly Anna". He shaped many young minds and treated all with his great smile and respect. I don't think he ever forgot the name of any student he had. The world lost someone very special!

Sincere condolences being sent to Nancy and the Lunney clan on the death of "Mr Lunney" ( Always referred to Bernie as Mr from the time we had him in our Grade 8 class at St Francis Jr. High in 1964-65 ) . Those of us who organized and gathered for 3 annual Grade 8 class reunions did so with Mr Lunney as the prime reason for our coming together ! Many of that class referred to Bernie Lunney as THE BEST Teacher they had ever had ! And certainly, as a group we had an awesome time reconnecting on all the reunions which were held at Marc and Nickie Brideaus place on the Peninsula. Not only did Mr Lunney captain the celebration, but we had Mr Keith Raymond, Mr Joe Ryan and Mr Jack Brownell also as honored guests. Mr Lunney was given the title of Officer who added honoarary guests to the magical class of 64-65 and he added both Debby Lawlor ( Fullerton) and JoAnn Morrison (Folkins) to his select group. On an even more personal note, through my career as an ER Physician I met up with Mr Lunney many times and always silently beamed as he and I would share our fond remembrances. I can speak for most if not all the class of 64-65 when I say that what was imparted to us thru the teachings of Mr B J Lunney has stood us well over the decades. We will carry his ideals with us as we move forward in years. Signed- Tom Fournier/ Debby Lawlor Fullerton
