Wanda Matthews

Obituary of Wanda Carol Matthews

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Wanda Carol Matthews announces her passing, which occurred on Friday, May 8, 2020, following a courageous 5 year battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Born 82 years ago in Woodstock, NB, she was a daughter of the late Kenneth and Vada (Lindsay) Bragdon.

Wanda lived most of her life in Saint John. She was an active, involved student and proud graduate of Saint John Vocational School and enjoyed spending time with her classmates, especially at dances. After high school, Wanda worked for many years as a legal secretary. She very much enjoyed her time in the office and especially her co-workers. The most important thing in the world to Wanda was her family, whom she lavished with pure, unconditional love, devotion, and support always. Wanda was gentle, kind, a quintessential lady, she had an extremely easy going nature, and her heart was only ever filled with love. Wanda was happiest when cooking and baking for her family and friends, participating in her children’s sporting events and activities, watching her grandson Mike play basketball, tending to her flower garden and tomatoes, watching the birds and visiting with her neighbours in her back yard, enjoying sunsets, picnics and taking long walks along the beaches of the Bay of Fundy with her family and Benny (Her favourite furry friend). She enjoyed music, dancing, puzzles, knitting, shopping, and road trips to visit with family and friends. Wanda will remain forever etched in our hearts and minds.

Wanda is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 59 years, William Matthews; one son, Stephen Matthews (Holly Burns and children Ashley, Chris, and Nick); one daughter, Angela Graham (Pat); her brother Carl Bragdon; and her grandson Michael (Jenn) and she was  beloved Nana to Shawna and Ashley. Wanda also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, and cherished friends.

Aside from her parents, Wanda is predeceased by her brother Leslie Bragdon, and sisters Leona Speight and Mary Jane Whipple.

The family is grateful to the staff of The Saint John Regional Hospital for the care and compassion they provided this week.

Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). There will be no visitation or services at this time. Online condolences may be made at www.BrenansFH.com.
