Martha Cheney

Obituary of Martha Elizabeth Cheney

It is with profound sorrow that the family of Martha Elizabeth Cheney announces her passing on May 18, 2020 at the Church of St. John & St. Stephen Nursing Home. Born on April 1, 1958, she was the daughter of the late Craig and Muriel (Lakeman) Cheney.

Martha had a deep appreciation for education. One of her greatest accomplishments was earning her degree from UNBSJ in Psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice. Throughout her career, she was a life skills coach with the Maritime Association of Life Skills and did supply teaching when she could. Martha was such an avid reader and could lose herself in books. She sometimes spent the entire night reading. She loved playing scrabble and spending time with her family, and BBQing. She was her happiest, though, when she was near the water, delighting in the sound of the beach waves. In her last days, the wonderful staff of the St. John & St. Stephen Nursing Home took her to the Irving Nature Park beach. The family is forever grateful for the care and compassion of all the nursing home staff and extends an enormous thank you.

Martha is survived by her son: Craig Bernard (Lish); daughter: Edris Bernard (Roger); brothers: Kirk Cheney (Holly), Bruce Cheney (Roxie), and Jason Cheney (Adri); grandchildren: Donovin, Zayden, and Ayla Grace; several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, as well as special friends: Trish and Chris Hartley, and Sherry Branscombe; and close friend: Jon Reid.

Besides her parents, Martha is predeceased by her brother Beverly Cheney.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (506) 634-7424. In keeping with Martha’s wishes, and with the protocols of the current pandemic in mind, a Celebration of Life will be held on Grand Manan Island at a later date. Donations in Martha’s memory can be made to the Diabetes Association of New Brunswick.
