Obituary of Margaret Hazen Banks

We share with you the peaceful passing of our mother, Margaret Hazen (Short) Banks, wife of the late Harry E. Banks, which occurred on Thursday, July 9, 2020 at the Loch Lomond Village. Born on December 8, 1934 in Westmount, QC, she was the daughter of the late Hazen and Kay (Peters) Short.

She is survived by her children, Kathy Conway (Brian) of Saint John, NB, Susan Sullivan (Brian) of Prince Rupert, BC, Hazen Banks (Lynne) of Truro, NS, Mary Jane Banks of Rothesay, NB; sisters-in-law, Anne Mitton (Allan) and Marilyn Short; her four grandchildren, Lauren, Shelby, Eric and Ashley; cousins, nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her brother, David and her mother and father in law.

Margie graduated from the Netherwood School for Girls and continued her education at the Saint John School of Nursing. She then worked briefly at the Saint John General Hospital. Margie and Harry moved to Fairvale where they raised their children and were active members of the community.  She was a member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Rothesay and the ACW. Margie volunteered at the elementary school, Vocational Training Centre and enjoyed her Monday Bridge Club.  She also could be found working the polling station at many elections. Among her many hobbies were tennis, curling, and gardening. Her favorite past times were reading and doing word search puzzles.

Margie could be stubborn but it was her determined perseverance that saw her through life's challenges.  Margie loved to socialize and had many life-long friends. She was always very interested in her four grand children and would love to hear updates about what was happening in their lives. She was a gentle spirit who was loved by all who knew her and will forever be remembered for her chocolate brownies (secret family recipe!) and her hand-knit socks.

Mum spent almost 15 years between the Loch Lomond Villa (Elm House) and the Loch Lomond Village.  She was never one to miss a good party and loved the socials and sing-alongs, playing bingo, bowling and various craft projects. Much thanks and appreciation to the staff and particularly the residents of Dogwood Lane for giving Mum a safe second home and family. A special thank you to the staff of 4D North at the SJRH. Many thanks as well to the EMT family she came to know well...and a special thanks for the strawberry sundae!

Toronto Maple Leafs forever.

She and Dad are dancing somewhere across the stars.
