I had Mr. Nickerson for science in Beaconsfield. He was strict, which was a little intimidating, but he also instilled a curiosity in Science that led to it being my primary study subject in university. Thank you so much for that, Mr. Nickerson.

To all of Norm's family I send my sincere condolences. I was introduced to Norm, Debbie and David in 1973 when I came to Saint John to begin my teaching career. Dawn and Walter Glover took me to visit Norm and his children. I had the pleasure to work with Norm through many events of the NBTA. He was a great educator, great person and dedicated to the teaching profession. May Norm rest in peace. Prayers for the family.

Winston Churchill said: “... we make a life by what we give.”
I first met Norm in the late 1970’s. We had both embarked on a journey of professional activism that was aimed at improving the working conditions for teachers in our province. Norm was very generous in sharing his time, his talents as well as his passion for learning. His vast array of skills both in the classroom and within our professional association will serve as a lasting legacy to his memory. The teaching profession is the grateful beneficiary of Norm’s life time of commitment to public education. Norm worked tirelessly over many decades seeking improvements in class size, professional development, school safety, pension reform, along with enhanced benefits for teacher welfare. When Norm retired from teaching, he continued his advocacy work for the teaching profession. Among other things, Norm played a significant role in the establishment of the N.B. Retired Teachers Association. Although removed by more than a generation from the current educational environment ~ every child, every teacher and every school in our province are the beneficiaries of Norm’s willingness to give of his time and talents. For those us who were privileged to know Norm, we were all inspired by his leadership to be better.
Louise and I are deeply saddened by the news of Norm’s passing. We extend to all of Norm’s family our heartfelt condolences. “Godspeed SunRay.” ~ Doug Gould

Dear David and family,
Please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of Norm. He was such a dedicated educator who cared deeply about the wellbeing of teachers, curriculum and the students of this province. It was through NBTA activities that I came to know your dad. One had only to meet and talk with Norm once to recognize his love and devotion to his children! For too many reasons to list here, take solace in knowing that Norm made a real difference in so many lives. He will be missed.

I remember Norm for many of his life passions, his appreciation for the finer things in life, his love of education, teachers and the important job they do, his devotion to the NBTA, his undying loyalty to dear friends, especially the "Rat Pack", but most of all, for his unconditional love and pride for his children and grandchildren. Mr. Nickerson was a great teacher. He taught me to be confident in my abilities and my answers.( “Are you sure....?”)
And so much real science. I’m sure no one forgets his bottles and bottles of creepy specimens.
He was a great drama director leading us to many awards and teaching us so much on and off the stage.
My condolences on your loss of Mr Nickerson; he was a big influence in my life and learning.

With deepest sympathy to you and your family, David. On the few occasions when I met him, years ago now, I enjoyed chatting with your Dad. His topics were wide ranging and eclectic; he was open to opinion and discourse, and strong in his positions on various topics. It was always a lively debate, much appreciated by me, and (I'm sure) by him. He quietly contributed so much to his community. A fine man who will be missed by many.

Debbie and David and familes - I was one of the fortunate many who learned real-world science, under the tutelage of your dad. I particularly remember field trips to the salt marsh at Saint's Rest, numerous physics demonstrations, and impressive - non-lethal - explosions.
I was also grateful for his devotion to drama and his keenness to develop our creative-thinking.
In many ways, he was a teacher away ahead of his time.
I am sure his grandchildren loved him for many of these same gifts.

I was a student of Mr. Nickerson at Beaconsfield in the early 1980's. He was often unconventional in the way he taught.... but he always kept our attention. I have always kept an affinity for scientific thoughts and puzzles over the years, and I can attribute a large part of that to him. I am truly saddened for this loss for all of his family and loved ones. My thoughts and prayers are with you....
