I am so sorry to hear of Bill's passing. Bill became a part of my life because he married my godmother, Mary-Lou. I had the opportunity to meet him on two occasions and I still have a book that he and Mary-Lou gave me about the practice of law in Ireland, "The Old Munster Circuit". I only wish my life and my various journeys had allowed me to know him better.
Mary-Lou, rest assured you and Bill are in the thoughts and prayers of the entire McLaughlin family.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon himm. May he rest in peace.

Dear Mary-Lou, Harold and extended family;
On behalf of the executive and membership of Saint John Vocational Alumni Association, I extend our most sincere sympathy in the loss of your dear husband, brother, and cousin. We have always appreciated both your and his contribution to our alumni Association. Our thoughts and Prayers for comfort and strength are with you as you traverse this most difficult path on the road of life.
I personally, did not have "Mr. Joyce" as a teacher while at SJVS, however, I certainly knew "of him" as he was, as others have stated, "a presence in the school". One knew he was there, in his quiet, gentle ways.
Following graduation in '62 my first encounter with him was many years later at the Dr. Snow Center in Hampton when Miss. (Kay) Smith was admitted as a resident. I recognized him as a Voc "commercial" teacher but since I was in Home Ec. I had to start racking my brain for names of male commercial teachers.
When I stated, "I believe you were a teacher at Voc but I can't put a name on you," his humour came shining through. He just said "You'll figure it out", and of course I did.
Our next encounter was through Alumni functions and later still (as some one else mentioned) several times at the "Island Girls" restaurant. I always enjoyed my encounters with both of you.
May you cherish the memories you have shared together over so many years and hold them close.
A donation in Bill's memory will be made to the SJVS Scholarship Fund.
Blessings and sincere Sympathy;
Louise Jonah-Craine (Hm Ec '62)
Alumni Liaison

Our relationship may have been mostly casual in nature, Mary Lou, but it saddened both Melody and I to learn of Bill’s passing. I first got to know him as an insightful source for all things Vocational School during my reporter days, but came to love you both as part of the after-church Sunday regulars of all denominations who frequented the old Reversing Falls Restaurant. So many laughs. He was a joyful soul and you, obviously, his soulmate. Clearly a case of, “Hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart.”

Dear Mary Lou and Family. Barbara and I extended out heartfelt sympathy in the passing of Bill. Even at my age I have a hard time using your first names as you always were to me Miss O'Brien and Mr. Joyce from our great VOC days. I was privileged to have each of you pour into my life and I thank our good Lord that I had two such stellar Teachers to go to. I so enjoyed my Law Classes with Mr. Joyce. For the past years we have had the privilege of meeting up with you at the Falls Restaurant and then Island Girls. Always was so great to see you and your winning smiles. Hard to believe that we are the age we are and yet lean fondly on our days gone by. THANK YOU for being such an inspiration and for setting a good example for me to be guided by in my years that have followed. Know our thoughts and Prayers are with you in the days ahead.
With deep appreciation,

My deepest sympathy Mary Lou on the loss of your husband Bill. He was a gentleman; always a smile and a hello whenever I met him. My fondest memory was when he would deliver "Meals on Wheels" to my mother, Kay Holding, at Father Raymond Riley complex. He would sing "Oh Danny Boy" to her; she smiled for days; you melted her heart. In Love and Friendship, Darlene

I wish to express my dearest condolences to Mr. Joyce's family. When I attended SJVHS he was my Vice Principal and I always found him to be a very gentle and kind man who, no matter how busy he may be, always found time to help and advise all those around him. He will be greatly missed.

Our condolences to the family of Mr. Joyce
Mr. Joyce was a well respected Vice Principal at Saint John Vocational School and as well, was respected as a teacher by many students during his time there.
We were very fortunate to have him as a teacher and soon realized he was willing to put in the time with you if you were willing to put in the time to learn what he was teaching. We think he really saw the full potential that students had, even though we didn't see it ourselves.
He was and always will be "One Of The Best " teachers that we could have possibly had.
RIP Mr. Joyce

My condolences to Mrs. Joyce and Bill's brother Harold on Bill's passing . I remember as a young boy serving Midnight Mass at Holy Trinity Church some 55-60 years ago and Bill was singing in the choir and performed a solo of " Oh Holy Night " his voice had me in awe ... the rafters shook with the power and tone of his clear , effortless voice . There must be a tremendous choir in heaven with April Mills , Jim Morris and Bill leading the way... Thank you for the memories Bill ... Rest in Peace my friend . Paul Cutler .

Mary Lou and Harold,
I met Bill in 1976 when I went to SJVS to student teach. What a wealth of knowledge he had and he gladly shared it with me....the novice.
I also learned of what a tease he was! He delighted in pointing out my Carleton County accent and he quickly told me I was pronouncing my surname incorrectly....so he decided to call me "Cough"....up until the last time I saw him.
I feel honoured to call him mentor but more importantly, friend.
My sincerest condolences.

I attended SJVS from 1970-1973 and knew Mr Joyce quite well. He was a great teacher, and made it easy for us to learn because of the way he taught. He had a personality as big as the outdoors and was always joking. He was a best friend to most of us kids, but it didn't stop there. His coworkers and everyone loved him. I even babysat when he lived on Fundy Drive (I lived a few houses away). Rest in peace Mr Joyce, you will be missed.

We have missed our occasional visits and of course, the “After-Mass” chats in the churchyard on Saturday nights. Bill’s love of music, his Irish wit, his banter and appreciation for a hearty laugh played right into our mischievous wheelhouse...Bill was one of the good guys!
