To Mrs. Betty Ring and family: I am so sorry to learn about your loss. I served on the City of Saint John Heritage Preservation Board (as it was called back then) with Bob. When I joined the Board, Bob was the Chair. He was very good in the position and his interest in history and passion for Saint John was there for all to see. I enjoyed his sense of humour - we would all meet as a group before the meeting was opened to the public and he would tell stories about his experiences that had us all laughing. I sometimes wondered what the members of the public might think hearing the laughing coming from behind closed doors of the Committee Room.
My deepest condolences to you and your family.
Sincerely
Gaye Kapkin, Saint John NB

SJVS Alumni Assoc posted a condolence

Dear Betty and extended family of Captain Bobby "Ringer" Ring;
On behalf of the executive and membership of Saint John Vocational Alumni Association I extend most sincere sympathy in the loss of your dear husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and cousin. Our thoughts and prayers for strength and comfort are with you as you traverse this most difficult path on the road of life.
Betty, In 1979 SJVS Vice-Principal, Bill Joyce (recently deceased also) approached 1954 graduate Mildred Monteith-Crawford (now Gregory) to know if she felt she could re-establish the lapsed SJVS Alumni. This she proceeded to do and one of the first to get on board was 1956 grad, your husband Bobby (Ringer) with you at his side along with others from 1952 -'56 classes and even some into the 1960's.
Millie served as the 1st President of this re-established Alumnus from 1979 -1981. In 1982 Bobby "Ringer" followed Millie as President and working together they capably led us through the school's Diamond Jubilee, with a 50 Year reunion in July of 1985, a great accomplishment as there were not the means to track and find former students and grads as is available today, BUT find them they did.
"Ringer" remained to serve as Alumni President for several more years following the reunion and remained a great supporter of the Alumni for many years. Another thing that he (and you) will be remembered fondly for will be the yearly boat trips he (you) took us on, up the Saint John and Kennebecasis Rivers, even to your camp, as an alumni group. His time and efforts were much appreciated.
Sincerely;
Louise Craine ('62)
Alumni Liaison

Betty, Geodie and families, Jane and I are so sorry for your loss. During my brief visit to your kitchen in late October you and Bob had the same smiles as ever but he mentioned that he wasn't feeling well. Our family has wonderful memories of mooring our sailboat in your cove and the use of your dock for our many trips on the SJ river. Several times you and Bob gave us and our staff memorable river tours which kept bringing us back.

Dear Betty, Lisa and Geordie... so sorry or hear about Bobby! We will never forget his laughter and wit,, he treated us like family as I know he did with everyone he touched. He made the Saint John river the most beautiful river in Canada when you went on boat rides with him, he took you to places you’ve never seen and stopped the boat if you wanted to take a swim! Our friend from Ireland had the pleasure of going on a trip up river with Bobby a couple of years ago and is still talking about how wonderful the day was and boasts about swimming in the Saint John river thanks to Bobby. Louise and I are deeply saddened by the news of Bobby’s passing. Bob and I had briefly talked in the late fall, meeting as we so often did, in the geographic centre of Millidgeville, like “...two ships passing in the night.” We were both sensitive to the health challenges that 2020 had unleashed on the world. As was always his way, we parted company wishing each other well and good health. Bobby rarely travelled alone. Betty was by his side as an equal partner in everything that they accomplished.
Although Bob was ten and a half years my senior, our friendship spanned over sixty-three years. In the early years, I knew his parents Grenville and Margaret better than Bob. We were all part of something that I like to call “Old Millidgeville.” In the 1950’s our community was a far more rural extension of the City of Saint John with a significantly smaller population. As a youngster, growing up in Millidgeville was an idyllic experience. Adventure was to be found everywhere. As children we were received kindly and openly by the community. It was, after all, just a short time since the conclusion of the Second World War. Optimism was abundant. The boundaries of our neighbourhood included the Millidgeville Airport, the Royal Kennebeccasis Yacht Club, St. Clements Church, the Millidgeville School (one room ~ grades 1-4), a community Post Office housed in the private home of Herb and Bea Craft, Roy Giggey’s Grocery Store, Col. Gordon Holder’s boat-works and Grenville Ring’s wharf and related boat-works. Bob’s dad ~ Grenville ~ was a talented individual and successful in earning a living and raising a family in Millidgeville.
Brothers Cove has always been a safe anchorage and Bob’s knowledge of its shape, contours and character was encyclopedic. He possessed a remarkable “sense of place.” As Bob gazed across Brothers Cove and the safety it provided to the anchored boats, he fully grasped the majesty and enormity of the St. John River system with its beautiful tributaries including our own Kennebecasis River. Bob was fully acquainted with the history of Indian, Goat, and Burnt Islands that provided additional shelter to the residents of Brothers Cove. He possessed enormous respect for the Indigenous People who owned the Islands under the terms of Treaty #18.
Bob was blessed with a kind and generous disposition. He enjoyed a deep and abiding respect for his neighbours. It has often been said that his personality was “...larger than life.” It is true that Bob was a gifted 4th generation boat builder. He was also a gifted raconteur. Bob’s love for his community and its history was contagious. In my view, he possessed a far more important skill. Bob was also a “master builder” of friendships. I am certain that hundreds of individuals would call Bob their friend. He understood, better than most, how to reach out and be inclusive. Bob also had the capacity to lift up his friends when their lives were complicated by personal sorrow.
Bob will be sorely missed by all who were privileged to know him. If he was still here, he would tell us that his greatest accomplishments involved his family: his life with Betty, his sister Joan and her family, his children and his grandchildren.
Louise and I wish to extend to all of Bob’s family our heartfelt condolences. Bobby Ring’s passing closes a remarkable chapter in the history of Brothers Cove and Millidgeville. ~ Doug Gould

Dear Betty, Geordi and family
Rob and I are so very sorry to hear this sad news about Bobby. Bobby was so full of life and had so much love for boating and knowledge of the River. Bobby was always so kind to us, we had lots of great laughs..especially when he plucked Rob out of the water as we moored our new boat there for a season, and Rob bought a cheap dinghy from Canadian Tire...well it blew apart....and Bobby rowed out to get us...it was really funny at the time..,,so many great memories of your awesome dad. Sending prayers and condolences for you and your family. Sue and Rob Keeley

My uncle was certainly larger than life.
He was a fixed point in the family constellation - strong, steady and true - you always knew where he stood, and that he had your back.
He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
