Obituary of Rodney Byron Gray
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Rodney Byron Gray, born June 27, 1954 to the late William and Henrietta Gray. Rodney was welcomed home on January 25, 2021, reuniting with his wife, Margaret Anne Rose and daughter, Kayla Erin.
Rod worked as a supervisor at Willett Foods for over 20 years before moving to a career at Irving Forest Services. He retired from Irving after more than 25 years. Rod leaves the many friends he made over that time.
The loss of his daughter Kayla Erin evoked a desire in Rod to support students of medicine. He volunteered for several years at the Dalhousie University Medical program in Saint John, designed to provide opportunities for observation and query.
Rod’s son, Michael, daughter-in-law, Rebecca and grandsons, Connor and Aidan, will treasure the many memories of Rod’s quiet, determined, and loving nature. Grampy was often on the sidelines, faithfully cheering on his grandsons at hockey, lacrosse, and rugby events.
He enjoyed sharing his hobbies and interests with his grandsons and nephews. Fishing adventures with Connor, Aidan and Nic and Montreal hockey games and Boston baseball games with Michael and Ryan were his delight. Uncle Rod was always there when needed to help with the school runs for Joshua, Alyssa and Jessica. He usually had a “spaghetti shirt” on hand to share with Zofia and Seth.
Rod leaves his siblings, Sharon (late Donald) MacKinnon, Stuart (Mary Ellen) Gray, Angela (John) MacDonald, Kim (Stephen) Lavine, Darren (Roxanne) Gray, Laurie (Jeff) Bennett, Marlaine (Derek) Gray-MacWilliams and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by siblings, Lance Gray and Corinne Gray.
Cherished family, Diane Scullion, Cheri Scullion, Chrissy Lavine, Robert Lavine and Frank Lavine were an important part of his daily life.
The family extends a heartfelt thank-you to the staff of Bobby’s Hospice. The incredible care and comfort provided to Rod while in your care, as well as the kindness toward family members, will always be remembered with deep gratitude. A special thank you also to Extra Mural, Dr. Le and Dr. Andreani for their ongoing care over the years.
Rest in peace Rodney and rise in glory.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, visitation and a Morning Prayer Liturgy will be held privately. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424).
