Obituary of Brigitte (Jeitler) Sperl
It is with heartfelt sorrow that we announce the passing of Brigitte Sperl, which occurred peacefully on March 12, 2021 at Saint Joseph’s Hospital at the age of 92. She was born in Austria on November 27, 1928 and emigrated to Canada in 1954 with her husband Ernest. They were happily married for 66 years, before Ernest’s passing just two months prior to his loving wife.
Brigitte is survived by her daughter Ruth Sperl (Larry Taylor) of Saint John, granddaughters Julie Sperl (Troy) of Montreal, PQ and Maria Sperl (Chris) of Dartmouth, NS, sister Adele Ward of England, sisters-in-law Viktoria Rainer and Annemarie Gruber of Salzburg, as well as numerous relatives in Austria. In addition to her parents, Maria and Karl Jeitler, Brigitte was predeceased by four sisters and three brothers.
Brigitte was employed as a nurse’s aide at the Saint John General Hospital when first coming to Canada. She and her husband spent their lives in the Saint John/Quispamsis area with frequent trips back to their homeland to visit family and friends.
Brigitte loved her family dearly. She was a very hard worker, putting much energy into providing a loving, nurturing home. Friends were always welcome at her house, guests never leaving without a meal or something delicious from her kitchen. Brigitte was also an excellent seamstress and gardener. Her kitchen was always full of the harvest of her bountiful vegetable gardens. She was always game for anything, pitching horseshoes, washer toss, bowling, fishing and playing cards. Brigitte loved spending time at their cottage on Terreo Lake, participating in social gatherings and swimming in the lake well into her 80’s. After retirement, she and Ernest enjoyed travelling and made many special memories.
She was always good natured and loved a good joke as well as her husband. She was kind-hearted and generous and willing to lend a helping hand no matter the occasion. She will be missed by all who knew her.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the wonderful 6th and 7th floor staff of Saint Joseph’s Hospital for their great care and compassion.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home. There will be no visitation or funeral at this time, with a celebration of life to be held for both Brigitte and Ernest at a later date. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society, Red Cross, or any charity of the donor’s choice. Online condolences may be placed at www.brenansfh.com.
