Obituary of Allison Northrup
It is with heartfelt sadness that the family of Allison Northrup, husband of the late Shirley (Robinson) Northrup, announces his peaceful passing on June 22, 2021, at the Church of St. John and St. Stephen Home, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on November 10, 1929, to his parents Clarence “Mac” and Myrtle, in Saint John, NB.
Allison was an extremely successful businessman over his long career, both in Canada and the United States, in construction and project management, beginning with Stephen’s Construction in Saint John and finally retiring from General Chemical in Morristown, New Jersey. At the time of his retirement from General Chemical he was the comptroller responsible for Canadian Operations and was involved in recovering company projects that were experiencing problems in their operations. While he worked at General Chemical, he was given many accolades for his accomplishments. Allison was also an officer with the Rodney Sea Cadets and did spend time serving as a Supply Officer in Sydney, NS, and was very active in the Boy Scout movement in the Saint John area, particularly with St. Pius Sea Scouts, which earned him many awards for his work in the scouting movement. Near the end of the second world war, Allison wasn’t old enough to enlist for active duty but was able to join the local navy reserve unit, HMCS Brunswicker. One of his proudest moments in the reserves was when the Germans surrendered one of their submarines off the coast and he was part of the crew that accepted the surrender of the submarine and brought it to shore. Allison was a man of great faith, and when he lived in Saint John was very active with Holy Trinity Church.
Allison is survived by his sons: Richard (Dorina), James (Denise), Douglas (Donna), and Mark (Karen); daughters: Patricia, Susan (Margot), and Elizabeth (Kent); grandchildren: Andrew, Jacklyn, Stephen, Vicki, Sarah, Samantha, Jennifer, Hannah, Jamie, and Colin; several great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. Allison was predeceased by his wife and his parents.
