Miss Hogan (we would never have called her Betty) was my home room teacher in Grade 9. I left Saint John in 1967 but always return for the class reunions. As I was having my hair done before the 2019 reunion, I met her at the salon. We had a nice conversation about St Vincent's and how things changed over the years.

Dear Connie and Pat:
We were very saddened to learn of Betty’s passing this morning; such a loss to all who knew, loved, and admired her. It was at my place of business, the Infusion Tearoom in the Saint John City Market, that Betty not only became a frequent and loyal customer, she became a friend! Many stories were shared and much laughter was had; we looked forward to seeing her each and every day but when there were times that Betty didn’t darken our doorway, her absence was noticed by myself, Greg (my husband) and staff alike!
Our hearts and thoughts are with you during this very difficult time and please know that you are not alone in remembering a truly wonderful woman who meant so much to so many. She will be sorely missed.

To the family of Ms. Hogan:
Ms. Hogan’s passing truly saddens me. I attended Saint Vincent from 1960 to 1963. Ms Hogan was a lovely, caring, passionate, dedicated teacher loved and respected by many. I hadn’t seen her for many years and surprisingly met her in superstore in 2006. I re introduced myself and with a pleasant half smile she said “yes, I remember you. It made me smile. We spoke for 20 memorable minutes. She was a remarkable lady and will sincerely be missed.

In 1967, I was a grade 11 student at SVGHS. One day, Miss Hogan called upon me to answer a question. The correct response required the completion of homework I had not done. I had no choice but to stand and say " sorry Miss Hogan, I didn't do my homework " and then I held my breath. She looked at me very directly and said " well, I respect your honesty." That very unexpected reply had a lasting impact upon me and, thereafter, I faithfully completed every assignment from Miss Hogan. She had no appetite for power; rather she enabled learning and to this role she brought intelligence,, respect, humanity,, impeccable integrity and remarkable humility. rest in peace, Miss Hogan.
