Obituary of Phyllis Mary Hughes
“Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day.”
Peacefully, Phyllis Mary Hughes (nee Watson), loving wife of 59 years to Walter (Sonny) Hughes, left this world for a new life with Jesus on Friday, January 14th, 2022.
Phyllis was born in Saint John on October 20th, 1940. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Clara Watson (nee Marshall). Phyllis lived her entire life in Saint John. After marrying the love of her life, she provided childcare for many families on the Golden Grove Road. She was well loved by all who knew her and will be fondly remembered for her chocolate cakes with boiled frosting and chocolate chip cookies. She loved entering contests and was gifted to win more than the average person. She won the Pepsi Perfect Summer and Coke’s grand prize for summer; her latest win was a quilt at Rocmaura. She loved her old country and gospel music.
She was the beloved mother of Mark (Deborah), Danny and Shelley Hughes, daughter-in-law Theresa Hughes. Nannie to Caleb, Cameron, Maria, Rachel, Jacob, Jordan, Carissa (Devon) Patterson, Eric, Jeffery and Jared, Great-Nannie to Lilah, sister to Donna Watson, Lois McNeil, Carol (Donald) Kilpatrick, Charles (Patricia) Watson, Brice (Lynn) Watson, Daryl Watson and Trevor (Shelley) Watson. Sister-in-law to Joseph Flewelling and Karen Watson, as well as a loved aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Marylin (Walter) Whittaker, Joanne (Joseph) Moore, Edward McNeil, John Hughes and Roy Hughes, and sisters-in-law Della Watson, Medena Ryan and Edna Flewelling.
The family would like to thank the staff and amazing nurses at Rocmaura Nursing Home for all their care in the past 3.5 years. Phyllis truly loved all of you and the family appreciates all you did in her final days here on earth.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Rocmaura Foundation, Tabernacle Baptist Church or Hampton Bible Camp would be appreciated by the family.
Due to the current restrictions, there will be no public funeral service. A Private Family Graveside Service will be held in Fernhill Cemetery.
Arrangements under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home (634-7424). Online condolences and memories may be shared at www.BrenansFH.com.
