Obituary of Esther Shanks
Peacefully, with her daughter by her side, at The Church of St. John and St. Stephen Home on Saturday, January 15, 2022, Esther Holland Shanks (nee Laughland) passed away at the age of 88. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Elizabeth Laughland (nee Burns).
Beloved wife of the late John “Ian” Shanks (August 2, 2012). Cherished mother of Jacqueline Elizabeth Henneberry (Mark), the late John Busby Shanks (Donna), and the late Barbara Ann Harwood (Paul).
Esther will be forever remembered by her grandchildren Matthew Henneberry, Jillian Roy, Nicole LeBlanc, Kimberly Legere, Bradley Harwood, and Dylan Harwood, as well as her 10 great grandchildren.
She is survived by her brother-in-law Moore Shanks (Jean), and many nieces and nephews.
Esther exemplified her faith through action, serving as a director and volunteer with the Saint John Community Food Basket for more than 30 years. She was also a devout member of Grace Presbyterian Church.
Esther was predeceased by her siblings Robert Laughland (Jess), and Alice Gillies (the late John).
Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church, 101 Coburg Street, Saint John, on Sunday, April 24, 2022, at 11am. In keeping with the Congregation's present COVID-19 guidelines, Proof of Vaccination and Masks are required for those in attendance. You may also choose to attend the Service virtually at www.gpcyoutube.ca.
A Private Family Interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery on Monday afternoon at 1pm.
Donations in Esther’s memory to the Saint John Community Food Basket or Grace Presbyterian Church would be greatly appreciated. Arrangements under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home (634-7424).
