What beautiful memories. I was able to watch the video. My heart and memories are with you. Blessings for the family. Cousin Marcia will forever be blessed. May you all have the strength you need at this difficult time. When my dad passed in '97, it was Marcia who pinned the black mourning ribbons on Phyllis and myself. It was deeply emotional that it was Marcia. May the Koven, Freedman and Guss relatives be at peace in the Kingdom of G-d. May Marcia fly freely to be at your side, as needed, out of sight, but in our hearts always.
Love,
Monica Guss

So sorry to hear of Martha's passing. What of lovely woman she was; a pleasure to chat with.
She knew my parents, my mom was a nurses as well and my dad of doctor at the DVA.
Of course I shopped at the store on Main Street and so knew Jerry. I also enjoyed serving them at the VW dealer where worked for years. Again a pleasure with both of you folks. Marsha made me feel like a family friend; I drove her home a number of times in her Audi.
I have missed her.
Sincerely, Dave Stuart

My sympathies to the Koven family. I was a tour guide at the Saint John Jewish Historical Museum for three summers in the mid 1990's. As a young woman, I looked up to Marcia. Truth be told, I found her a bit intimidating! She was such a force of nature! Now that I am older and have more life experience, I have a much greater appreciation of the sacrifices Marcia made and the work she did to create the museum and keep the Saint John Jewish community alive. Marcia was a trail blazer and I am so grateful that I got to work with her at the museum. (P.S. Your father Jerry was a doll! I loved it when he came to pick up Marcia at the museum. He always had a smile on his face and a joke to tell us tour guides.)

The Freedman family were indeed pillars of the Saint John Jewish Community. They passed on their love and dedication to Marcia and her brothers Lew and Bernie. Marcia as a nurse at the old Saint John General Hospital tried her best to calm me, a nervous young intern, while Dr. “ Lew”, as a mentor served as a quiet model. Marcia and Jerry opened their home to my wife Judy and myself, when we visited Saint John.
Marcia’s devotion and memory will be forever engraved in her work of love for the Saint John and Shaarei Tzedek Jewish Community in the Jewish Historical Museum.

I first met Marcia when I returned to Saint John. We met for the first time at the Westfield Golf and Country Club. We both played with the Niners. When they were looking for a Captain we both took on the job - co-captains. What fun we had with our
"Funny T-Shirt "competition, Tomb Stone Competition and just a fun morning of golf. If our game was bad we always had lunch with "the girls" to look forward to. When Jerry and Marcia moved to York Point we played bridge with the ladies there. Nothing too serious, but fun. I so missed Marcia when she moved to Ontario. Rest in peace Marcia .Love you. I first met Marcia when she was busy setting up the Saint John Jewish Museum and Archives. (I was preparing a collection on the writings of and about New Brunswick women -- [Whispers from the past, Fredericton: 1986]). She helped me locate relevant documents in the museum's archives.
I was so impressed by her energy and commitment to the history of the Jewish community in Saint John. We had many conversations about Judaism in this city, including instances of tension between Jews and non-Jews which she experienced as a young woman growing up in our city.
Marcia was a wonderful woman who believed that knowledge of others contributed to a richer urban community, and she gave countless hours promoting religious-cultural exchanges. Her legacy lives on in the Jewish archival collection, (currently housed at the New Brunswick museum) and the artifact collection largely on exhibit at the Jewish museum.
Marcia Koven was a gem for the Jewish community and for the entire city. We are all in her debt.
May her memory be a blessing.
