Obituary of Anne Louise "Nancy" McLaughlin
With great sadness we announce the passing of our Mom, Anne Louise “Nancy” (Gallant) McLaughlin, on March 14, 2022, at Embassy Hall, Shannex. Born on May 22, 1933, to Howard and Alice (Byron) Gallant, a much-loved Mom, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend.
Survived by her children: Cathy Howlett (Warren), Tara Worden, Chris McLaughlin (Wendy), Tricia McLaughlin, and Peter McLaughlin; grandchildren: Kendra (Joe), Lauren (Alex), Nathan, Aaron (Julie), Codi (Matt), Jenna (Tyler), Brianne (Chapin), Jaclyn, Natalie (Jeremy), and Keith; 15 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Jean Gallant; many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Predeceased by her loving husband, Bill; her sisters and brothers-in-law: Connie Dryden (Jack), Claire Collins (Frank), Ruth Gallagher (Jack); brother, Byron; sister-in-law, Carol Anne Foley (late Frank); and son-in-law, Chris Howlett.
Mom lived, as a child, on Lansdowne Avenue in Saint John and moved from the upstairs flat to the ground floor flat when she married Dad, and so spent the first 40+ years in the same house. Summers were spent in Chapel Grove and eventually Mom and Dad built a home and moved to Chapel Grove year-round. Chapel Grove was a place that came alive in the summers, and with the arrival of Fathers Joe and Gerry Owens the singsongs would begin. The “Grove” crowd loved their Saturday nights.
Family and friends were always welcome, and many occasions were celebrated at Nancy and Bill’s. If we only had a dollar for every “Chicken Patti” that was served from her kitchen.
Mom worked very hard and was very community-minded, always giving a helping hand to those in need, and through her involvement with St. Peter’s and St. Bridget’s Church, CWO, MC School, NB Liberal Association, and many other organizations.
She and her sisters started a cleaning company, Able Window Shine, which is still operating today. We would often come home to venetian blinds in our bathtub and an employee at our kitchen table.
She operated a Kindergarten from our home in Chapel Grove for many years.
As the Campaign Organizer for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and the Cancer Society, she worked tirelessly for many years and was never shy in asking people to go door to door for this annual campaign.
Mom loved a good game of Bridge and was always thrilled to play with her lifelong friends and joined them often, even while living at Shannex.
Thanks to Air Canada, we were able to travel together and apart to some wonderful destinations. Florida was a winter home for Mom and Dad for several years and a destination for her children and grandchildren.
