Our infamous weekend to St. Stephen to visit Fitz. Two good friends who had more in common than they realized, even at that time. You'll never be forgotten, my Brother.

Dear Mary; Sarah; Debbie; Tommy; Danny; Michael and Wendy. Our sincere condolences on the passing of a wonderful man your husband; father and brother Gary. We always remember Gary with his smiling face; funny jokes and always a kind word. I Monica remember all the times i would go 2 houses down the street to visit Wendy and see Mary in the front hall getting ready to go out somewhere with Gary.
A few years ago at our parent's home in Halifax - Gary; Mary and Wendy dropped by to see our parent's Gerard and Margaret McGillivray ; our brother Maurice and myself Monica on the front verandah and what laughs we had sharing old stories about the good old times on DeMonts Street and I remember my mother talking about how Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip had come to visit in a drive on Prince Street and Mrs. Splane with Gary just a babe and our mother with Maurice gathering to see the royals go by and I think this was one of the first few times our parent's got to know each other's families and the friendship built up from there between our 2 families. Lots of fun times over the years.
All of you are in our thoughts and prayers at this time and know that Gary is watching from up on high looking after all of you with a smile and twinkle in his eye.
God Speed my friend.

Mr. Splane was my favourite teacher of all time. I remember most his sense of humour, kindness, ability to remember the simple details about your life and encouraging your ideas. When I returned to QES as an adult for my teaching practicum, I saw another side of Gary at social gatherings. Still hilarious and kind. His teaching inspired me in my own teaching. Mary/Sarah - we were so very saddened to hear of Gary's passing. We (Bruce likely much longer) have known Gary for at least 40 years and through out all those years, Gary always had a smile, a kind word, perhaps a gesture, like touching your arm ....... His smile always invited a smile in return, and sometimes a big laugh (depending on what story Gary was telling). I met him several times on the hill top trail and we always stopped to chat - about grandchildren, spouses, life in general. He was kind, caring, thoughtful, intelligent, and the thought of his passing leaves me with a feeling of sadness for his immediate family, including our brother-in-law, Uncle Dan and also for those of us outside family who knew and loved him. Bruce and I send our very deepest condolences to both of you and his wonderful grandchildren. We will miss Gary.

Mr. Splane is one of the very few people that you come across in life and forever remember them. I read in one of the condolences that he was “Magical”; he certainly was. I had the privilege of having him for grade 5 at Q.E.S and his way with not only kids, but all people is well documented in all of these tributes… knowledgeable on many topics (I remember some of the stories), very funny, yet firm, sincere, confident but also sensitive to individual needs of all the different personality types in the classroom. He was very unique. He had a way of making you feel valued & important. Very interactive with each child… I look back at my grade 5 class (it was a 4/5 split) and was not an easy bunch, several kids with high needs, others at low levels… but he made it work and everyone wanted to be there. I don’t know how he did it.
Years later (after high school), Mr. Splane was at a tree nursery I was working at and I hadn’t seen him for about 8 years; I was 18 years old at the time with facial hair and wearing dirty work clothes, but he recognized me right away! I was very surprised, given the amount of students he would have had in that time as well as my altered appearance since he saw me last.
One of the memories I have of Mr. Splane, whenever he enters my mind is seeing him with a large coffee in each hand and finishing both, on more than one occasion! (Funny the things that kids notice.)
Highly respected and always remembered.

Mary, Sarah, and Family,
I was heartbroken when I heard this news and I am so very sorry for your loss.
Mr. Splane was my teacher in grade 6 and to say he had a positive impact on my life is an understatement. Mr. Splane was one of those few teachers who impact the lives of their students in a such a profound way that even as the years pass you still tell people just how awesome they were or you recall a memory of your time as their student and can’t help but smile. His passion for teaching made learning exciting and his commitment to his students made school not so daunting.
He truly was an extraordinary person and I feel incredibly privileged to have had him as a teacher.

Mrs. Splane, Sarah & Family;
As a young child, thinking I was incapable of learning, Mr. Splane connected me with the right educators to help open my eyes to a world of possibilities. Not only as my grade 5 teacher was he patient with my slow pace, his encouragement changed my outlook on life. He gave me a large quartz crystal during that time as a reminder of the beauty of everything on this planet. Today, I still have this quartz and it reminds me of this man who poured so much positivity in us, it still encourages me to this day. Thank you both for sharing him with us ! His impact was so profound and remarkable.
Truly we are sorry he is now gone. However his memory will stay alive. We send our love and deepest sympathy for your great loss. Virtual hugs come from our hearts to yours.

Mr. Splane was hands down my favourite teacher of all time. He is part of the reason I became a teacher and I actually talk about him every year, since I now teach grade 5!
I remember a student pranking Mr. Splane for April Fool’s Day. The student’s mom bought the exact same coffee that he got and the student put lemon juice in the prank coffee. Mr. Splane made a show of having to leave the room and the kid went to work. I remember watching this go down and it was the best prank ever. While Mr. Splane knew what was happening, he was a good sport and let us have our fun.
He was an educator who impacted so many lives. Sending my love to all that have loved him. We are so blessed to have lived in the same time as he did.

Whenever I think back to my years at Quispamsis Elementary School, Mr. Splane is one of the teachers that had a big influence on me without me realizing it at the time. He was a great role model for us 10-11 year olds, especially for the boys who did not often have male elementary teachers to look up to.
Soft-spoken and cool, he had a certain way of adding humor to his lessons that always kept the students entertained.
Many times during the course of the year, he would re-arrange our desks and change the seating plan. He would often have his students’ desks put together in groups of 4, often like you were all sitting at a table together. One time my good friend Benoit and I stayed after school the day he planned on changing the desks, and we begged him to put us in a group with the girls we each liked. He laughed and said “Boys, if I put you with them, the both of you won’t be paying any attention to my lessons and you’ll be talking to them all day!” We laughed, yet strongly denied this and begged until he finally said, “Alright, I’ll give you each ONE chance, but if you start talking when I’m teaching I’m going to have to move you to another desk”. We both high-fived and went home, excited that we’d be sitting next to our crushes the very next day (unbeknownst to them!).
The next morning, we sat there pretending to be surprised at the new seating plan, as he called out the new groupings. He was in on it, and gave me a quick wink as he announced that I’d be sitting next to my crush.
After we were all seated in the new seating plan, me and Benoit simply wouldn’t stop talking to the girls, and it wasn’t more than 10 minutes into the lesson when I heard “Christos, I’ve gotta move you to another seat”. I was in disbelief as I remember him chuckling to himself as he switched me with another student. As I sat down in my new seat in disbelief after losing my chance, he came over to me with a big smile and whispered to me “see, I told ya you’d be chatting her up all day” and have me a good slap on the back as he laughed his way back to the chalkboard. But at least he gave me my shot!
He was a kind and generous man, and an educator who saw the big picture of what his role was; not only as a teacher, but rather a role model for his students. He will be dearly missed by all who had great memories of him like I did.
Mr. Splane - thanks for teaching me many lessons as a young boy and my sincere condolences to all his family and friends and those who had the privilege of having him as a teacher. May your memory be eternal.

Oh Mary and Sarah, I am so sorry for your loss. I’m heartbroken for you both. Gary was always someone I looked forward to chatting to on a visit home. Always so friendly, a huge smile and a fabulous joke to share - I will miss him. Keeping you both in my thoughts. Heaven gained an amazing and talented angle. ❤️❤️
