Obituary of Joan Peggy Sullivan

Sullivan, Joan Peggy It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Joan Peggy (Smith) Sullivan on Sunday December 27, 2015 at the Loch Lomond Villa, Birch House. Joan was a proud British woman, born in Woodgreen, England and brought up in Essex, England, She was a daughter of the late Francis and Winnifred (Green) Smith. Joan met her husband Henry while he was stationed in Mount Morn, England during WWII. She says Henry was such a handsome soldier and she always recalled the two of them riding over the White Cliffs of Dover in an army truck when she was visiting him. When the war ended, Henry returned home to Canada in December 1945 on the Queen Elizabeth and Joan and their son Pat arrived in March 1946 on the Maritania which docked at Pier 21 in Halifax. Joan and Pat caught the train to Saint John where her husband Henry was waiting for them. She has resided in Saint John since that time. Over Joan’s 89 years, she has left behind many memories and family members – Patrick (Sandra) Sullivan of Nerepis, Carol (Ron) Fisher of Saint John, Pam (Donnie) Lyons of Saint John, Frank (Angie) Sullivan of Norton, Brenda Donovan and Doug Crain of Grand Bay-Westfield; sister Dorothy (Henry) Hoddy of England. Several grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Along with her parents Joan was predeceased by her husband Henry Edward, daughter Barbara Jean, granddaughter Heather Lynn, brothers Bert and Frank and sisters Frances, Lillian and Patricia; and son in law Ron Fisher. Joan being a Brit had a great love of gardening. She had beautiful flower gardens, some of the flowers along the back of her yard were taller then her children. She took such pride preparing her dahlias for the season and enjoyed all the colours and fragrances of each and every flower, the peony being her favorite! Joan got much joy in her huge wegelia bush on the front lawn, it was always a conversation piece. She had a love for knitting. Over the years, we all have enjoyed her handmade sweaters, hats, headbands, mittens, socks and slippers. I think she probably taught most of us the skill starting out with a few stitches on some of her needles trying to make a pot holder or scarf. Joan was employed by The Atlantic Wholesalers on Montreal Avenue from 1962 and retired when her husband Henry retired in 1982. In her late years, Joan enjoyed visits from her family and watching a few of her favourite television programs; Dancing With The Stars, Figure Skating, American Idol, E-Talk, Judge Judy, and we can’t forget Cindy Day. When telling us the weather, she would always say: "Cindy Day said"! Our family would like to thank the employees as well as the volunteers at the Loch Lomond Villa. You are truly dedicated loving people. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visiting on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 from 2- 4 and 6- 8 PM.
