Obituary of Elizabeth Louise Burnham Lowe

Lowe, Elizabeth Louise Burnham -- The death of Elizabeth Louise Burnham Lowe occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on July 25 2016. Born March 16, 1916, she was the daughter of the late O. Arnold Burnham and Myrtle (Holder) Burnham. Elizabeth was a graduate of Saint John High School ‘33 and the Saint John Hospital School of Nursing ‘39. She enlisted in the army in 1940 and served as a nurse in England, Italy and Sicily before returning to Saint John in 1945. She attended McGill University for Public Health Nursing and later moved to Ontario. She returned to Saint John in 1959, became school nurse at Saint John Vocational and initiated a training course for nursing assistants. In 1964 she became Provincial Director of Health Services for Canadian Red Cross NB Division. She retired in 1981 and in 1983 was awarded the International Red Cross Florence Nightingale medal. Elizabeth was past president of the United Empire Loyalist Association, Life member of the Nurses Association of NB and the Saint John General Hospital nurses alumnae and also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 69. She is survived by one son, Peter Lowe and many relatives and friends whom she loves dearly. She was predeceased by her brother. Robert A. Burnham. Arrangements are under the care of Brenan's Funeral Homes, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB. Visitation will be held on Friday August 5 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. Funeral service will be from Brenan's Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, August 6th at 2PM. Interment at Old Cedar Hill Cemetery will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, rememberance may be made to the SPCA-Animal Rescue or a charity of the donor's choice.
