Obituary of Geraldine Carruthers McKay
Geraldine Jane Carruthers (Gerry) Mackay Formerly of Toronto passed away 19 April 2003 at her home in Rothesay New Brunswick. Born in Montreal 1920 she was the daughter of Charles and Dorothy (Doone) Hanson, widow of Hugh (Yip) Mackay, mother of Sheila, Charles and his wife Jennifer, Frances and her husband John, Sister to Elizabeth, Sheila, Nora, and the grandmother of Tiffany and her husband Les Donohue, Hugh, Cicely, Sam and Joe Mackay, Hugh, Hazen and Drew Simson. She graduated from Macdonald College Ste. Anne de Bellevue Quebec, worked for the Canadian Bank of Commerce Kingston Ontario and during WW2 she was in the CWAC, (sergeant), served in Kingston and posted to Detroit, Washington DC (working for William Stephenson “Man Called Intrepid”), Brockville and overseas to Headquarters Canadian Reinforcement Unit Farnborough England. She was a member of ACW at St. John's York Mills Toronto and St. Paul's Rothesay. Her hobbies were knitting, sewing, the Saturday crossword and reading. She did not like cooking or traveling. Her favorite sports team was the Argos. She smoked for 68 years. When no one would get her cigarettes she relied on friends from across Canada to mail them to her. She was proud of her Canadian past, her great grandfathers Isaac Burpee MP for Saint John and John Carruthers, who ran three times unsuccessfully against John A. Macdonald. Two of her uncles played hockey in the 1924 and 1928 Olympics. Funeral service will be held at St. Paul's Anglican Church Rothesay, Tuesday April 22nd, 2003 at 11:00am. Arrangements under the direction of Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424).
