Obituary
Obituary of Elga May Garnett
It is with great sadness that we share, after a long and courageous fight with cancer Elga passed away peacefully at Saint John Regional Hospital on July 5, 2017. Elga was born November 1, 1930 in O'Leary Prince Edward Island. She spent her adult life in Saint John where she raised her family. Elga was an avid gardener and was featured in two gardening books and the newspaper for her outstanding rock garden. She was generous with her plants and knowledge and this generosity also extended to her home where there was always room at the table for neighbours and friends. Elga was a member of First Wesleyan Church and built a strong network of friends whom she served with in outreach and ministry. She especially enjoyed her active years in Best Years Fellowship and their frequent excursions. All her acts of kindness and caring were generously repaid through the many visits, cards and prayers bestowed upon her during hospital stays and convalescence at home. Elga was devoted to her family. When her children were raised she babysat her two cherished grandsons. She was even devoted to family pets as Zoey, then Flash became part of the group who could count on her for daily companionship. Elga is survived by her daughters Brenda Garnett of Saint John and Susan Garnett (Andrew Norton) of Calgary, her grandsons Luke Nicholls (Chelsea) Saint John and Ethan Nicholls (Nicolle Bourgeois) of Halifax and her brother Leonard Bernard (Hazel) of O'Leary PEI. She is also survived by many devoted and generous nieces and nephews whose visits meant to the world to her. Elga was predeceased by her parents Jack Bernard and Janie (Buchanan), her husband Lawrence Garnett, son David Garnett, brother Bradford Bernard, sister Gladys Clark, nephew Blair Cain and the father of her grandchildren Rick Nicholls. As she journeyed these past few years she was met with such kindness and compassion by so many doctors and healthcare professionals. A special debt of gratitude goes out to her family physician Dr. Alana Cooke, her Extra Mural nurse Nancy Connell, and Home Care Worker Julienne Fournier. The gifted team of the Palliative Care unit at the SJRH played their part in the journey operating from a truly special place of the heart. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Sunday, July 9, 2017 from 2 to 8 pm. A Celebration of Elga’s life will be held on Monday, July 10, 2017 at 2 pm from Brenan’s Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery. If you would like to honour Elga's life a donation can be made to the Red Cross, Palliative Care Unit at the SJRH or Saint John Wesleyan Church! www.brenansfh.com
