Obituary of Shirley Grace Elizabeth Colquette
The death of Miss Shirley Grace Elizabeth Colquette, formerly of 971 Dever Road, Saint John West, occurred on Friday, May 23, 2003 at the Carleton Kirk Lodge Nursing Home. Born in Winnipeg, on March 10, 1918, she was the daughter of the late R. D. and Alice (Dougherty) Colquette. For many years, Shirley served as a research assistant to her father, who was the voice of the “Neighborly News from the Prairies”, a CBC Radio broadcast of which he was the first editor. After her move to Saint John in 1946, Shirley commenced employment with the Regional Office of the Bank of Nova Scotia, until her retirement 35 years later in 1981. She was a long standing member of Portland United Church, where she taught Sunday School for over 25 years. She was also active with the Saint John Historical Society, the Saint John Naturalist Club and the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She is survived by nephews, Tom, Richard, Gordon (Barbara) Simms and grand nephews and nieces; Cynthia, Steven, Robert, Kirk, Michael and Sarah Simms. She was predeceased by her sister, Muriel A. M. Simms. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Funeral service will be held at Portland United Church, 50 Newport Crescent, on Monday, May 26, 2003, at 11:00 AM. Interment in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery. Remembrances to Portland United Church, Carleton Kirk Lodge Building Fund or a charity of the donors choice.
