Obituary of James A. S. Murphy

The death of James Murphy of Saint John, NB, husband of Sarah “Sally” (Scott) Murphy, occurred on Wednesday, August 24, 2005 at the Carleton Kirk Lodge Nursing Home in his 94th year. Born in Bass River, NB, a son of the late John and Mary (Starrak) Murphy, Jim was employed with Imperial Oil for forty-one years. He was an avid curler and sportsman, having won four N.B. Provincial Senior Men's Curling Championships and the Canadian Senior Men's Curling Championship in 1967. Jim was a member of the provincial and Saint John Sports Hall of Fame and an honorary member of the Thistle Saint Andrew's Curling Club. He served as president of the N.B. Curling Association as well as the Thistle Curling Club and was past-president of the Saint John Chamber of Commerce. Besides his wife he is survived by one daughter, Judith (Bill) Purdom of Ottawa, ON; one sister, Emma (Claude) Fewer of Moncton, NB and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his first wife, Geraldine (Herd) Murphy; five brothers: George B., Yorke, Scott, Morrin and Alton; and two sisters, Cora Feron and Rosaline Pollock. Jim was an adherent of St. Mark's United Church. Arrangements are under the care of Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506) 634-7424 with visitation on Sunday and Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 30, 2005 from Brenan's Chapel at 1 pm. Interment will be held at Ocean View Memorial Gardens. Remembrances may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
