Obituary of F. Douglas MacAndrews

The death of F. Douglas MacAndrews of Ridgewood Veteran's Wing, Saint John, husband of 69 years to Winifred (Doherty) MacAndrews, occurred peacefully on Wednesday, September 14, 2005 at his residence. Born in Saint John on March 3, 1908, he was the son of the late Fred A. and Charlotte (Gough) McAndrews. Mr. MacAndrews was a Veteran of World War II, serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was a graduate of the University of New Brunswick in 1932 with his Batchelor in Forestry. He was Chief Timber cruiser for Consolidated Paper in Quebec in the mid 30's and was Forestry Officer with the Federal Government for 28 years before his retirement in 1973. He had an extremely enjoyable last four years of his career when he was transferred to the Forest Experiment Station as Senior Scientist and Fire Control Operator. Douglas was in charge of Woods Operations in the National Parks of Canada, First Nations and Military Camps. He was a member of the Saint John Naturalist Club and an active volunteer with the New Brunswick Museum. Douglas had a tremendous love for music and played the guitar, drums and saxophone and was a supporter of the Symphony New Brunswick Orchestra. Mr. MacAndrews was an avid gardener and superb photographer who did his own developing and printing and was an outdoorsman, who enjoyed canoeing, swimming, lacrosse and in his younger years was involved with lightweight boxing. He was always a great neighbour and had great neighbours. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Robert D. (Anne) of Quispamsis and Neil L. (Colette) of Ottawa, ON, one daughter, Ellen Mackay of North Saanich, BC, five grandsons, Terence, Daniel, Timothy, Evan (Wendy) and Fraser and one niece, Audrey Anderson of Boulder, CO. He was predeceased by one brother, Aubrey. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Saturday and Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Funeral service will be held at Brenan's Funeral Home Chapel on Monday, September 19, 2005 at 11:00 AM. Interment in Fernhill Cemetery. Remembrances to the NB Museum, Doctors Without Borders or the charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated. The Royal Canadian Legion will hold a tribute to a Veteran service on Sunday evening at 7:20 PM at the funeral home. The family wish to express their gratitude to the Staff of Ridgewood Veteran's Wing for the wonderful care Douglas received over the past 20 months while he was a resident there.
