Obituary of Thomas Byron Phelan
The death of Thomas Byron Phelan of Saint John, husband of 50 years to Theresa (Gorman) Phelan, occurred on Saturday, October 29, 2005 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Born in Chatham, NB he was the son of the late Thomas and Mary (Murdock) Phelan. Byron was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Royal Canadian Navy. He was a founding member of the Rockingham-Halifax Branch of the Knights of Columbus and was a 3rd Degree Member. Byron graduated from St. Thomas University with a B.A. and from St. Mary's University with a B. Com., he also received his C.M.A. designation from Dalhousie University and his H.O.M. designation from the University of Manitoba. Byron was an Accountant at Mount St. Vincent University for 10 years. He was then employed as Director of Finance for the DVA Hospital in Halifax for 20 years, transferring to Charlottetown with the DVA as Directors of Manuals. He retired from the DVA and returned to the Saint John area in 1987. Besides his loving wife, he is survived by his sister-in-law, Mona Phelan, brother-in-law, Harry Gorman and family of Chicago, IL, nephews, Louis Nowlan (Margie), Donald Nowlan (Nancy) and Thomas Nowlan (Mary Ellen); nieces, Dorothy Henry (Ricky), Mary Dickinson (Allen), Patricia Gibson, and Rose Dorothy Dickens and special nieces and nephews, Pat, Chris, Peter and Tom Murray, Mary Coventry, Michael and Susan Gorman, Eileen LeBlanc and Beth Wilband and their families. He was predeceased by brothers, Rev. George Phelan, CSB and Patrick Phelan and his sister, Marie Nowlan. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Monday 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter's Church, Clarendon Street, Saint John, on Tuesday, November 1, 2005 at 10:00 AM. Interment in Holy Cross Cemetery. Remembrances to the Canadian Red Cross, Ridgewood Veteran's Wing Comfort Fund or the charity of the donors' choice would be appreciated.
