Obituary of Frederic James

Dykeman, Frederic James (Ted), U.E., C.E.M., C.D. ? After a colorful life of 83 years, our dad, Frederic James (Ted) Dykeman, husband of the late Valerie Anne (Collins) Dykeman, died peacefully in the company of his four children at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Thursday evening, January 5, 2006. Born June 9, 1922 at Saint John, NB, he was a son of the late Ewart and Lenore (McKnight) Dykeman. In 1936, at the age of fourteen, he became a member of the #7 District Signals N.P.N.M. He went on to active service on August 26, 1939. He served in Saint John, Gaspe, P.Q., then overseas in England, attached to the 23rd. Regiment R.C.H.A. 4th. Canadian Armoured Division; then on to France shortly after D-Day and then Luxembourg, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He remained in the Reserve Army for many years, commissioned in the 8th. Princess Louise's N. B. Hussars and transferred to the 3rd. H.A.A. Regiment (The Loyal Coy.) and retired as Adjutant. He was a past member of the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association and the Royal N. B. Rifle & Pistol Club. Ted was also a past member of Westfield and Riverside Country Clubs, United Empire Loyalists' Society, Saint John Garrison Officers Badminton Club, Royal United Services Institute, Garrison Officers' Mess, and the Royal Canadian Signals Association. He had been an ardent motorcyclist in his youth and was a past president of the Saint John Motorcycle Club. He was also a member of the Byng Boys Club. He was employed for many years with various American and Canadian Government Departments and was Immigration Liaison Officer for the Port of Saint John at the time of his retirement in 1982. He is survived by four children, Dr. Bruce Dykeman (Cathy) of Rothesay, Barbara Toole (Michael) of Fredericton, Peter (Donna) of Millidgeville, and Susan DeLong (Brad) of Rothesay; and a sister, Barbara Howell of Victoria, BC. He is also survived by and will be dearly missed by his thirteen grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife (1999), his parents, and two brothers, Donald and William. By request of the family, there will be no visitation at the Funeral Home. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, January 9, 2006 at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Rothesay at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Animal Rescue League or the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
