Obituary of Muriel Violet Vicars Hazen
The death of Muriel Violet Vicars “Vicki” Hazen (1915-2006) occurred on February 9, 2006 at the St. Joseph's Hospital. Born in Saint John, NB the daughter of the late Beverly V. and Gwladys (Shewen) Millidge, Vicki was predeceased by her only brother, Thornbrough S. Millidge and is survived by her son, Mansel (Natasha) Turner and grandsons, Alexei and Tristan. Descended from Loyalist and pre-Loyalist, Vicki was a granddaughter of T.E. Millidge, a prominent Saint John ship-builder and a former president of the Bank of New Brunswick. Vicki's great-grandfathers, James Simonds and James White founded the trading post at Fort Latour in the 1760's. Vicki will be fondly remembered for her kindness, generosity and the encouragement that she provided in support of art. Herself and accomplished and passionate painter, Vicki began her studies with Saint John artists, Elizabeth Holt, Violet Gillett and Julia Crawford. In the 1950's Vicki resumed her studies with the Irish painter Patrick McMackin in Ibiza, Spain, where she resided at the time. Vicki's benevolence, gentle caring ways and kindness will be greatly missed. Arrangements are under the care of Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506) 634-7424. Following cremation a private graveside service will be held at Fernhill Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
